In this article, we will explore the possible causes of sleep deprivation.

Many conditions and diseases have been cited to be the cause of sleep disturbances. Health problems are majorly the reason why people experience difficulty with their sleep.

  1. Unhealthy lifestyle: poor lifestyle choices can bring about sleeping problems, especially unhealthy eating habits and other routines related to living.
  • Staying awake till late hours in the day by working late, playing video games, or using other electronic devices.
  • Sleeping in later to make up for lost sleep can confuse your body’s internal clock and make it difficult to establish a healthy sleep schedule.
  • Using your bed for activities besides sleep can create mental associations between your bed and wakefulness.
  • Oftentimes, our diet plays a significant role in sleeping difficulties. For instance, the excessive intake of caffeine which is present in energy drinks and other soft drinks is a stimulant that can stay in your system for hours, making it harder to get to sleep and potentially contributing to insomnia. Cigar and cigarettes contain nicotine another stimulant that can mess up your sleep. Alcohol intake also affects sleep.
  1. Allergies and respiratory problems: Difficulty in breathing at night due to allergies or other respiratory problems especially in the upper respiratory tract can make it challenging to sleep at night as you will be unable to breathe with your nose.
  1. Physical illness and Pain: constant pain can make it difficult to sleep, it can even wake you up after falling asleep. Almost any condition that causes pain can disrupt sleep by making it harder to lie comfortably in bed.

Findings show that health complications related to Type II diabetes can be part of an underlying cause of insomnia. Pain from peripheral neuropathy, more frequent need for hydration and urination, and rapid blood sugar changes can interrupt sleep. There is also a correlation between diabetes and other health conditions10 that are known to interfere with sleep including obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and depression11.

Examples of chronic pain that may cause sleeping problems are arthritis, chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia, inflammatory bowel disease, persistent headaches, continuous lower back pain

  1. Stress, anxiety, depression: mental conditions like depression and anxiety can make one unable to sleep. Neurodegenerative conditions like Alzheimer’s and dementia have also been proven to cause sleeping disorders. It can be difficult for you to fall asleep or to stay asleep when you are stressed.
