The Role of Groomsmen at a Wedding

At both small and large weddings, all the players have roles to play. The bride and groom have it easiest of all. They need only look great, show up and say their vows with smiling faces. There is always a lot of fuss around the bridesmaids, but what about the groomsmen? Well, they too have a very important role to play.

Selecting a Groomsman

The groomsman is usually someone important to the groom who the groom wants to include as a visible part of the wedding. Most often, he would be a friend, cousin, brother or father. He is usually a lifelong friend or family member. As such, a wedding becomes another very important bonding opportunity and many grooms like to celebrate the occasion with special groomsmen gifts from Groomsmen Gifts Mart. There would usually be just one groomsman at small weddings, who would take on all the responsibilities. If he is the only groomsman, he would be called the best man. At bigger weddings, there are often several groomsmen, with one being chosen as the best man – usually the groom’s brother or closest friend.

Of course, a groom would want to have the men in his life that mean the most to him as his groomsmen, but he needs to ensure that his guys are responsible enough to manage their duties. At least there should be one or two responsible ones who are willing to pick up the slack on behalf of the others. To ensure all of their close friends are acknowledged, a couple may choose to have separate groomsmen and ushers. If that’s the case, the role of the ushers is to simply escort guests to their seats.

What is the role of a Groomsman?

A groomsman does much more than look handsome on the big day. There are other supporting roles to the groom he is expected to play. He acts as an advisor to the groom, helps him get organized and often helps with any wedding planning details. The best man or another groomsman should offer emotional support to the groom for any pre-wedding nerves; assist the groom in picking out what the groomsmen are going to wear (also to organize such things as measuring appointments, collecting suits and returning suits/accessories after the wedding.

The groomsmen will be expected to attend all pre-wedding events like engagement parties, bachelor parties and rehearsal dinners. The groomsmen or best man would help to plan and pay for the bachelor party. Together with the bridesmaids, they would help decorate the getaway car. Groomsmen often give presents for both the engagement and the wedding itself.

On the day itself, the groomsmen would help the groom relax and help him dress. They could behave as ushers by showing guests to their seats at the ceremony. The best man usually holds the rings during the ceremony and is often asked to say a speech. The groomsmen will dance with the bridesmaids and single female guests at the wedding and when its all over, they would help to carry gifts and the couple’s personal items away. Groomsmen are important and usually underappreciated attendants at a wedding, so go ahead and spoil them for their efforts!
