Tips For Buying A Family Holiday Home In Europe

Sharing is caring!

Europe is a great place for buying a second home for your family holidays. It is home to a variety of exciting cities and beautiful landscapes. However, there are some important things to consider before buying your family holiday home

Choosing The Right Location

Choosing the location will be the most important part. You need to consider such factors as climate, local amenities, language, and transport accessibility. Remember that you might have to compromise some things. For instance, if you want to get a place somewhere in the nature with great weather, like the Amalfi Coast, you will likely not have quite a good options for public transport.

On the other hand, you can find an apartment for sale in Paris, surrounded by a large selection of shops, restaurants, and public transport, but the weather will be a lot more unpredictable. Therefore, the location choice will really depend on your family preferences and the kind of activities that you prioritise.

Budget Considerations

Setting a realistic budget early on will be helpful when purchasing a holiday home. Keep in mind that you also need to add any additional costs on top of the purchase price, such as maintenance, taxes, insurance, and any other expenses.

Also consider things like currency exchange rates (if you are buying in a place with euros) and any taxes you will have to pay as an international buyer, which could impact the overall budget. Not only that, if you are buying a place that is unfurnished, you will have to spend extra on that too.

Once you have a number in mind, it will guide you through the selection process, as certain places will be immediately off the table.

Property Types

In Europe, the property types available could be different to what we are used to in the UK. For example, villas in Spain are a lot more common and available to buy. Of course, apartments with communal gardens or a shared pool will be a budget-friendly option that is also popular for foreigners. For urban living with a touch of luxury, you will find stunning Paris penthouses for sale, offering breathtaking views and modern living. Your choice should reflect your family’s lifestyle.

The main considerations here are the size and layout of the property. A private outdoor area, such as a garden or a terrace, could be a deal-breaker for a lot of families, while others will be happier with a balcony in a luxury penthouse.

Visiting The Properties

Before making a decision, try to visit multiple properties in real life. This is important to check the condition of the place and get familiar with the surrounding area. Although reputable estate agents will provide all that information beforehand, it’s never 100% clear what it is like until you are actually there.

During your visits, pay attention to the different things that will be important to you during the holidays. For example, what the neighbourhood is like, can you get a train or a bus easily, are there nice cafés around it for your morning coffee, etc. If you are planning to visit a few times, it is recommended to do so in different times of the year too.

Conclusion

A lot of planning and research goes into buying a holiday home. But, once you find that perfect place, it will be well worth it!
