Tips for Keeping Kids Occupied on Rainy Days

Sharing is caring!

Some days are happy and fun, and you arise in the morning to the sounds of birds chirping and see the light streaming in from your window. Other days, you wake up to the sounds of pounding rain, and you open your eyes, but your room is nearly as dark as it is at midnight. Those rainy days. What would we do without them? They make the grass grow, the flowers bloom, the vegetable sprout. Without rain, we’d all go hungry! So, there’s definitely what to appreciate about rainy days, but, honestly, when we wake up to the sound of heavy rain knocking on my roof, wall, and window on a Sunday, we don’t feel so grateful. Instead, we feel a bit overwhelmed. The kids are home, and we need to entertain them, inside, all day long! What to do? No worries, ladies! Here are some fun indoor activity ideas that your kids will love, and you’ll get to have fun spending time with them and creating memories that will last forever after!

  1. Dress Up Time. Take out the box of dress-up clothes and Halloween costumes from the attic, and have your kids put on an impromptu play of their favorite stories! You’ll be the director and the audience. The doctor can put on a scrub top and pants, the witch can wear a pointy hat and use your broomstick, and the clown will get a colorful wig and face paint. This can keep my kids busy for hours. To keep this activity one that my kids look forward to, the only time my kids get to play dress up is on rainy Sundays.

Are you wondering how to put together a dress up box? You can really do it over time; mine has a few pairs of Barco scrubs from my old job, my old baking apron, kids’ high heels I once splurged on, some costumes from Halloween, and other odds and ends that every family accumulates over time.

  1. Baking Time. Most kids love cooking (sometimes even more than mom does!). Use this time to bond with your kids over cookie dough. Have them decorate sugar cookies, or bake cupcakes. They’ll have fun, and have a delicious aftertaste of this activity after the food is baked and ready to eat!
  2. Go to the Library. It will take a drive, but the library itself is indoors, so, if you dare, get all your kids in the car, and drive off! As long as your kids love to read, they’ll have a nice time there. Sit the younger kids down at the table and read them some stories, while your older ones can curl up with the latest bestselling fiction.

These are my kids’ favorite activities to do on a rainy day! Try them out with your kids, and hopefully, your family will have a wonderful experience together!
