Tips For Taking Care of Your AC Unit

Sharing is caring!

So you have now installed your new AC unit into your home and are enjoying the cool air. If you want to keep everything running the way it is, you are going to have to take the time to maintain your unit and take care of it. While some maintenance work on your AC unit might be a little too complex, there are a few things that you can definitely do to help extend the life of your unit. Here are some tips for taking care of your AC unit.

Schedule an Annual Tune-Up

Generally, before the season starts for AC it is recommended that you call up a professional and have them set it up. As an AC unit works, some of the electrical connections might loosen and a few maintenance issues might be looming. The experts at Sun Air Services recommend calling up an expert to look at this because they will ensure your AC unit works as it should throughout the whole season. Not only that, but if there are any looming issues, they can fix them before they become a much larger and more expensive problem. You can never go wrong with having your AC unit looked at once a year.

Clean the Fins

If the fins around your AC unit are dirty, it might be time to give them a cleaning. Fortunately, this is something that you can do easily. When attempting to clean an AC unit, always ensure that you have unplugged it and that it is powered down. First, remove the outer cover of the AC unit and gently spray water to remove any built-up dirt on the inside. For the outside, grab a vacuum to collect anything caked on the outside. This is a great way to keep the fins clean, allowing the AC unit to run as efficiently as possible.

Straighten The Fins

If you notice that any of the fins are bent out of position, you can grab a knife or any other precise tool and bend them back. If fins are bent, they will reduce the airflow of your AC, thus resulting in a less efficient unit. Fins can be easily fixed if they are bent out of position, however, if many of them are bent out, it might be time to call someone to help out.

Clean the Filter

Another easy way to help keep your AC clean is by changing the filter on the blower. If the filter becomes clogged, it will have trouble pushing air through it. Typically speaking, the filter should be changed at least twice a year, even more, if you live in an area where it clogs easily. By changing the filter, your unit will not have to work as hard, therefore prolonging the life of it.

These are all methods and tips that you should follow to keep your AC maintained. While it does take time and effort and a little bit of money for this maintenance, it’s much better than having to buy a new unit altogether. If you want your house to be cool, you have to take the time to make sure everything works properly. How do you plan on taking care of your unit?
