Tips On Proper Tipping Etiquette

Sharing is caring!

If you are going to an unfamiliar country, apart from the best places to visit, places to stay and public transportation to utilize, learning about their etiquettes and traditions, particularly their tipping etiquette, is also necessary.

Are you planning to visit a new country? Below are some of the few things you need to know about general tipping ways and traditions.

Tipping Etiquette When In A New Country

There are some countries where tipping is a tradition while some countries fall in the category of no tipping country, but everyone is welcome to give tip to services, food or any products they receive. When deciding how much tip to give, you may consider the following:

  • Overall satisfaction on the service or products you receive
  • The purpose of the service received
  • How much is the product or service received

How much to tip? The rate or the amount of tip to give depends on where you are and why did you get the services. Below are some of the usual instances why a tip is possible:

  • Dine In To A Restaurant

After dining in to a restaurant, giving tip to the waiter or waitress that served you the food is a good idea. There are some restaurants that include Service Charge into your final bill. The service charge or SC is automatically added to your total bill. If there is a service charge, you can decide to give or not to give tip as the total amount of the service charge collected is divided among all the waiters and waitresses.

But, if you still decide to give, or the restaurant requires no service charge, what you can do is get the total amount of your bill, excluding the VAT or Value Added Tax, and the 10% of that is a decent amount of tip to give.

Also, there are restaurants that cater food delivery services, hence for this kind of food service same computation can be considered.

  • Riding A Taxi, Grab Services, Uber Or Any Public Transportation

Riding a taxi, Grab, Uber or any public transportation is normal in any country, hence if you are planning to tour around any places in the country using this mode, giving tip to the drivers or tour guides can be considered. The amount of tip to give is dependent on the distance of the travel, how happy and comfortable you are with the ride and so on.

Most of the time, passengers depend on the amount to tip on their change, like if their bill is $88, they will give $100 or whatever is the currency of that country.

  • Stay In A Hotel

There are many reasons why do you need a bellboy service, some of which are carrying your bag to your room, requesting for an extra blanket, cleaning your room or ordering food etc., the amount to give them is dependent on the kind of service you received, but most of the time, the amount is around $50 but can be lower or higher than that.

The above mentioned are some of the generic tipping etiquettes that you should follow.
