If there is one thing that is unbearable in the summer, it’s the invasion of flies in the house! Sprays, diffusers, traps of all kinds…you’ve tried everything. What if this time we skip the chemicals box to try mild solutions?
Here are some eco-friendly tips to overcome these annoying little bugs.
- Treat with Essential Oils
Some essential oils have a very effective insect repellent action. If they don’t work against bedbugs, they should be tested against flies in the house. This is particularly the case with lemongrass, peppermint, lavender, eucalyptus, or even geranium.
To diffuse them, you can either pour a few drops in your diffuser or, if you do not have any, in cups or bowls (to be placed near a window). You can also mix a few drops of the essential oil with hot water and spray around the house.
Be careful, always handle essential oils with care, inform yourself before use, and remember to ventilate the rooms of the house after spraying/diffusion.
- Try Basil
A classic! Its scent, yet so pleasant to us, is an excellent natural repellent against flies…which hate its smell. In a pot or in a dry bouquet, place it near doors and windows. It is truly THE all-in-one plant: insect repellent, anti-bacterial, anti-viral, and edible; we love it!
- A Lemon or Fragrant Geranium
This is another very effective plant against flies. The latter is strongly repelled by its preponderant odor. Place your geraniums on your window sills: in addition to preventing insects from entering, they are very aesthetic!
- Try Pennyroyal Mint Against Flies
Like geranium, the smell of pennyroyal mint repels flies but also fleas, mosquitoes, and ants. However, bees love them. Great for promoting pollination, which is seriously threatened by human activity! Be careful if you consume it. It is toxic in high doses.
- Use Baking soda
Mix a tablespoon of baking soda in three large cups of hot water. Spray the mixture around windows and doors. Quick to prepare and odorless!
- Try the Cloves Out
A well-known grandma’s trick for warding off flies, cloves are extremely effective. Cut an onion, lemon, or orange in half and poke cloves in each half, on the flesh side. Place them in strategic places in the house, and repeat the operation every three days.
- Whitefly Vinegar
The strong odor that emanates from white vinegar repels flies (unlike that of its cousin, apple cider vinegar, which attracts them). Spray a mixture of white vinegar and a few drops of eucalyptus essential oil on the outside of your home, on your doors and windows. You can also simply have the cups filled with white vinegar in the house (out of the reach of children!).
- Give Garlic a Chance
The smell of garlic repels most insects. To make good use of its repellant powers, make a decoction of garlic and place it on the windowsill. To do this, roughly chop five garlic cloves; place them in a saucepan and add 2.5 liters of water; bring to a boil and simmer for 20 minutes, covered; let cool without stirring for 1 hour; then filter the decoction through a sieve to remove the residue.
- Hire a Pest Control Company
If the flies infestation in your home has blown out of proportion, the best solution is to hire a pest control company. They are professionals with years of experience with the extermination of all kinds of pests. They have the right tools and equipment to get rid of the pest infestation effectively and permanently. They carry out the extermination process professionally without damaging your property, furniture, and any other belongings.
