Top Bedroom Trends in 2021

Sharing is caring!

With many staying home through 2020, many people are wanting to redecorate those rooms that they use the most. The bedroom is definitely among them. In addition, bedrooms now serve a purpose beyond just a place to sleep or change clothing. With everyone at home more often, bedrooms are becoming a place to escape and lounge when one needs some time alone. This leads to a need for different furniture for your home than you would traditionally include in a bedroom.

Along with the trend of adding accent chairs, accent tables, benches, or chaises for lounging, there are some definite trends being used in bedroom decor today.

Texture on texture

Just as it is trending to layer complementary but contrasting colors and patterns, it is also popular to layer different textures. You might layer a wood grain with rattan or wool runners, or microfiber throws on coarse fabric.

Whitewashed, weathered, antiqued, and distressed

Although everyone is buying brand new furniture over old for durability and functionality, there is still a desire for that traditional, transitional, or rustic look. Bedroom furniture of solid wood is whitewashed to give it a country fashion, while other pieces are intentionally and hand distressed to give them a weathered or antiqued look.

Pattern heavy furniture and decor

As well as layering textures, you can also layer patterns. There is a talent to mixing such things, especially when working with florals or other complex patterns. While some patterns can complement each other nicely, others contrast too sharply to work together. You want to give your bedroom some style, not overwhelm yourself with a decor that is simply too busy. You can make this work with patterned furniture or plain furniture with patterned decor.

Traditional materials in a modern style

More and more people are valuing furniture made from natural, durable, renewable materials that reduce waste without depleting natural resources. Even if you want a bedroom in the modern style with clean lines and little ornamentation, you can bring traditional materials into your home with a variety of bedroom furniture options. The most popular natural materials are woods with a nice grain, rattan or wicker bedroom furniture, or cotton and woven textiles for added texture.

Earth tones for a calming atmosphere

As already mentioned, bedrooms are no longer just a place to sleep. If you plan to unwind in this space, it needs to be warm, comforting, and calming. Psychologists will tell you that certain color schemes will work best for creating this relaxing atmosphere. Blues and yellows can give a happy vibe to the space, while using muted colors and earth tones creates a soft aesthetic.

Wall sconces and other traditional decor

People are turning to more traditional lighting when it comes to their interiors, trading in overhead lights for wall sconces and decorative lamps. Soft lighting is important for creating that relaxing, cozy atmosphere. Of course, if you have a small seating area for reading or lounging, you will also want to include a reading lamp nearby for more light.
