Getting a new coworker can be an odd experience. You can get so used to working with the same people everyday that when someone new is introduced, it can feel unnatural and forced. Here are a few ways to bond with new coworkers and make them feel like part of the team!
Switch Up The Seating Arrangement
It’s easy to get comfortable with the desk you’ve been sitting at for a while, so try to push yourself out of your comfort zone and sit next to a new coworker! If you are content with your usual spot, then invite them to sit near you. Chances are, they feel even more uncomfortable than you, and offering them a place to sit can help make their transition a lot easier.
Invite Them To Lunch
The lunch room can be one of the scariest places for new people. If you notice a new coworker eating alone, ask them to join you for lunch! If your office frequently goes out for lunch, let your new coworker know that they are always welcome to join. Even if they intend on bringing lunch from home, it’s always nice to extend the offer anyway. Additionally, if you’re running out to grab coffee, ask your new coworker if they’d like to come! Little gestures like this can make all the difference for a new person.
Plan A Group Activity
It can be hard to get to know someone during a busy work day, so try planning a group activity that everyone, including your new coworker, can participate in! If your company offers some sort of employee wellness program, such as complimentary gym memberships, ask your coworkers if they want to hit a group workout class after work. Instead of going straight home to eat dinner after leaving the office, head to a local restaurant with your team and grab some food. Planning fun outings after hours is a great way to bond with your coworkers in a more relaxed setting, and you will be able to get to know each other on a deeper level when you’re not stressed about finishing an assignment or meeting a deadline.
Partner Up
People love to be asked their thoughts and opinions, so the next time you need an extra set of eyes to proofread something you wrote or check out a project you’re working on, ask your new coworker what he or she thinks. You’ll be able to get a fresh opinion, and they will appreciate that you value their opinion. If your new coworker seems to have a lot of knowledge on a project or task you’re working on, try asking for their input. Collaborating on something together is a great way to bond with a new coworker, and your team will only strengthen with the extra help.
