Going on vacation can be a wonderful time to relax, spend time with family, and take a step back from your busy and stressful life. Unfortunately, leaving your home unoccupied and empty for days or weeks at a time can be dangerous.
It could leave you vulnerable to burglars, thieves, and other criminals who may try to gain access to your home or vandalize it in another way. As a result, it is a good idea to make an effort to protect your home when you are away. This article is going to go over a couple of ways to help you do just that.
Get a Security System
One of the best ways to protect your home, whether you are at home or not, is to get a security system. A security system can often alert the authorities when someone attempts to gain unauthorized entry, and an alarm will sound which should stop criminals in their tracks.
Often, even the fact you have a system in place can deter criminals from entering your home. Whether you go with a honeywell security system or another option, these are a great tool to have. They not only have sensors for your doors and windows, but many may also come with cameras and motion-sensing lights to keep your home safe.
Many can even be controlled remotely, so you can always check in on your home, no matter where you are. Installing and buying these systems is generally quite affordable, as well. Despite all of these benefits, less than 30% of American households have a security system in place.
Make it Look Like Someone is Home
Another way to keep your home safe when you’re away is to make it look like somebody is home, even when they’re not. Criminals are much less likely to victimize a home in which someone is present, as they prefer to enter empty homes in most cases.
So if it looks like people are living normally in your home, there is a much lower chance of anything taking place. Thankfully, there are several ways to make it look like you’re home while you are on vacation. You can turn your lights on a timer, have someone park in your driveway, and get your neighbor to take your mail and mow your lawn.
Now, these won’t guarantee your home is protected, but certainly make it much more likely. Many things like lights, TVs, and various other electronics can be turned on and off remotely, making it easier to make it seem as if someone really is in your home when they’re actually not.
Have Someone Looking out for Your Place
Having someone looking out for your home when you are away is another good idea. This could be a neighbor or you could have a friend/family member swing by everyday and make sure all is good. They can check to ensure nothing is broken or damaged, and keep an eye out for any strange people around your place.
If they notice something weird, they can be sure to let you know so that you are always in the know and aware of what’s going on. Also, you could have a friend or family member house-sit while you are gone, if you want to make sure someone is around and looking out 24/7.
These tips can ensure that your home remains safe and sound when you are taking a family vacation. They aren’t the only ways to keep your space safe, but are certainly some of the best.
