What Is The Pikler Triangle and Is It Montessori?

Sharing is caring!

The pikler triangle is associated with the Montessori type of education. So first, let’s discuss the pikler triangle.

What is the pikler triangle?

A pikler triangle is a climbing triangle. It is based on the philosophy of Dr. Emmi Pikler, a Hungarian pediatrician who studied the needs of babies and toddlers. Her philosophy encourages freedom of movement and promotes safe exploration. RIE method is also somehow related to Emmi pikler.

According to Doctor Emmi Pikler, our babies climb when they are ready. The Pikler triangle is such an awesome toddler toy that allows children to explore “climbing” safely. The Pikler triangle is low enough to ensure safety. At first, the child will only hold it for standing up, then he will climb a few rungs, and finally, he will climb to the top when he is confident. The pikler triangle’s objective is not to put them on the climbing frame but to let our children explore safely and securely.

How is it different from other climbing Toys?

Most climbing toys are made for older children. They are only suitable for children who can walk and can climb stairs up and down on their behalf. But this baby toy is a perfect choice for small toddlers as well as a 5-year-old child.

You may think that only playground equipment is all that your child needs. I agree with you on this but what happens most of the time is that we are helping our children in climbing. I always say never do this. Because If a child can climb, then let him climb on his/her own. If we are helping them, then we are potentially placing them in an unsafe situation. If they need our help, then obviously, they are not ready for the next step.

Is it Montessori?

Montessori education is named after an Italian physician Maria Montessori who was an innovator and educator. She opened the first Montessori school in 1907. Montessori education involves the natural learning of children.

In my opinion, the pikler triangle is a true Montessori toy. In a Montessori environment, we often use a bridge or toddler staircase. The bridge is used for babies who start to crawl, while the staircase is used for toddlers to encourage them to climb up and down. It allows our children to practice movement that he will need in real life.  If you want to know more about the Montessori role of the pikler triangle, click here to read more.
