As we already know, the world has been affected by coronavirus for the past few months. It is reported that more than 150 countries in the world are affected by this dangerous virus. It causes millions of deaths. The virus also affects almost all industries and also daily life. People are forced to stay at home and away from their beloved ones in order to stop the spread of the virus. With the coronavirus continuing to influence the Earth in such an impactful way, it is not surprising that it becomes a hot topic of conversation. People almost find it hard to remain hopeful with the continue restrictions and life-changing to fit this new normal.

However, this new normal is even more shocking for kids. This is why authors Alex Friedman who is a former senior business executive, White House Fellow, and CFO of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, and AngelaMeng who is a former journalist, investment banker, and model, met with an Uruguayan illustrator named Alvaro Gonzales and two translators. Their meeting is purposed to create an interesting story that would help kids, parents, and also teachers across all cultures. The story is titled The Big Thing.

The story is written from the point of view of a kid named Bea who is 5 years old. It tells a story about how she learns about what it means to live in this new era of our world. The Big Thing explains the coronavirus in a way that can be understood by both kids and adults through the perspective of Bea. Below are a few things that you can learn from Bea.

There is Always A Silver Lining

As we already know, this pandemic forces everyone to do their activities from home. Including kids who must study from home for a while instead of going to their schools. While Bea has to learn digitally from home, Bea’s teacher asks several questions that can help to change a negative to a positive. This is what starts Bea’s adventure to find a new perspective and point of view.

We Have Real-Life Superheroes

When Bea clicks on the news related to the coronavirus with her parents, she does not only learn more about the virus but also about all of those who are in the frontline, working hard to cure and heal the affected ones and keep the world running. Bea learns that we have real-life superheroes. They are doctors, nurses, farmers, delivery people, and grocery store clerks.

The Earth is Healing

Bea’s favorite color is blue. This is why she loves to look up at the sky. Since people stay at home and there are fewer vehicles outside, Bea sees that the sky is bluer now. Then, she realizes and finds out that the Earth is healing and becoming green again. She realizes that better air and better nature is being provided.

There are Ways to be with Our Beloved Ones

Though we cannot meet our beloved ones, we are so lucky that we have the technology and live in this digital era. With technology, Bea is able to stay connected to and talk to her grandparents and friends. Even though it might be a little bit longer for her to hug them again.

Spending Time with Our Families Can Lead to Great Things

Bea realizes that the greatest silver lining during this pandemic is that she can spend more time with her parents. She can learn more about them and do new fun activities with them. With her parents by her side, Bea knows that there is nothing to fear.

The book educates children about the virus. But the most important things are about silver linings, family love, and resilience. Bea knows that there is hope in every situation even though the world is so much different now. The creators of the book also learned so much about connecting in new ways during this pandemic. The team learned about what makes a story, the importance of accentuating and clarifying aspects, and how languages can be culturally different when it comes to translating.
