Why It’s Important to Know How Long a Medical Marijuana Card Lasts

Sharing is caring!

A medical marijuana card (MMC) is what dispensaries use to identify you as a credible licensed marijuana patient.  It shows that you can legally use, buy, and grow cannabis products in your state.

When you look at a medical marijuana card, it is just like a student ID card from your local college that contains your name, your photo, date of birth, address, and patient license number. It is also called a medical marijuana ID or MMID.

How Long Does a Medical Marijuana Card Last?

Medical marijuana has become a widely accepted treatment in most of the states in the U.S.  However, each state has its own laws, policies, and criteria for obtaining medical cannabis and also its use for medical purposes.

If patients feel that medical marijuana would be a beneficial treatment for their illness or condition, they should visit a physician to get a recommendation.  Then, they can apply for a medical marijuana card or ID that they can use as a patient ID card.

This card is used to purchase cannabis products at licensed and duly authorized dispensaries in the state.  However, the recommendation of doctors for a medical marijuana card has an expiration.  It is only good for a certain amount of time.

Once the recommendation expires, the patient has to renew their medical cannabis recommendation by visiting the doctor again or making an appointment with a new marijuana doctor to get the recommendation renewed.

Each state has its own policy regarding the requirements for the renewal of a medical marijuana card.  Typically, a recommendation is good for one year or 365 days.  That is also the typical length of time that a medical marijuana card will last.
