The heart is one of the hardest working organs in the body and needs to be looked after. Heart problems lead to the deaths of more men and women than any other issue in America. Residents are repeatedly told what they need to do to keep their hearts healthy. Players of poker online may like to gamble, but you should not do that with your heart health.
Keeping the Heart Healthy
There are plenty of things that you can do to keep your heart healthy. Some of these are:
- Healthy eating – This does not mean you can’t eat anything other than fruit and vegetables but have a good mix of foods.
- Activity – Exercise safely as much as you can.
- Keep your weight under control.
- No smoking.
- Stay stress-free.
Who is at Risk?
To be at risk, there will generally be issues in your life that bring you to this position. Understanding what these are will limit the risk if you deal with them. High cholesterol or high blood pressure will be a factor, so they should be controlled. Smokers will run a higher risk than the general population, as will people who are overweight.
The heavier you get, the higher the odds of developing a high condition. Age can be a factor, especially when there is little or no exercise taken. A family history of heart problems should alert you to the risks and allow you to take the steps needed to keep yourself safe. When it comes to age, it is a woman who is over 55, and for a man, it is when they are over 45.
Prevent the Onset
The most common type of heart disease is CHD – coronary heart disease. It occurs when the tubes taking blood to the heart become narrower due to fat building up in the arteries. The blood finds it difficult to get to the heart when this happens, and a heart attack could soon occur.
What can you do?
Knowing that you have a problem is the first step towards curing it. If you have regular checks for your blood pressure and cholesterol, you will know if something is wrong and can deal with it. When it comes to cholesterol, the check should be made every 4 to 6 years, and the blood pressure checks should start by the time you reach 18 years of age. As there are no signs, the only way to know if you have it is to get checked.
Aspirin
Once you reach the age of 50, there is the option of taking an aspirin a day to lower the risks. It should be discussed with a medical professional first as there are reasons why some people may not do this. It thins the blood, and that can be a problem. Statins are another option, but they need to be prescribed.
Self-help
Healthy eating is an excellent way to start keeping your heart healthy. An excessive amount of fats, sugar, and fats should not be eaten. Salt is another thing to limit. When it comes to what you should eat, there are fruits, vegetables, grains, and fats such as olive oil. Alcohol intake should be limited. For a woman, this means just one drink a day, and for a man, a limit of 2. Exercise is also essential.
