3 Romantic Getaways to Recharge Your Relationship

For most of us, everyday existence is filled with demands and deadlines. With constant pressure, it can be all too easy to de-prioritize one of the most important parts of our lives: our relationships.

If work stress and interpersonal dramas are getting you down, it might be time to get away from the hubbub for a week to rest and recharge with that special someone in your life. After all, studies show that a holiday can dramatically strengthen your relationship.

We’ve put together a list of five romantic getaways to recharge your relationship.

  1. Hecla Island, Manitoba

If you’re sick of the daily grind and bustling city life, Manitoba’s Hecla Island may just be the answer to your prayers. Located a few hours north of Winnipeg, this island boasts plenty to do minus the crowds. Local photographer and inn owner Lori Janeson notes that the island isn’t just a paradise in summer, explaining, “no matter when you arrive, locals will welcome you to Hecla Island with open arms.”

If you and your partner love to be active, there are dozens of nature trails to explore, whether on foot or bikes. Many of these trails lead to breathtaking sights, such as bays littered with quaint, historic lighthouses.

To really take the romantic up a notch, head down to Sunset Beach. Never swamped with tourists, this quiet local gem looks stunning at dusk. Why not take a picnic and go for a sunset swim? Bathed in the pink and orange glow, you’ll find it impossible not to feel inspired.

  1. Jukkasjärvi, Sweden

For a couple’s retreat that will leave you feeling a world away from the stresses of daily life, head to Jukkasjärvi in northern Sweden over the winter break. Each year between December and April, this village plays host to the famous Icehotel.

Constructed from ice blocks harvested from the local Torne River, the hotel offers a truly unique experience to guests. Each room is unique and sculpted by a jury selected artist. Even the beds are made from ice blocks, with reindeer furs to keep guests toasty warm.

The hotel also contains a reception, bar, restaurant and even a church. There is certainly an air of romance and poetry associated with renewing your vows in a church that is rebuilt every year, never identical but always stunning.

During the winter, rug up with your partner and head outside to take in the wildly captivating lights of the Aurora Borealis. Surrounded by this natural wonder, work will be the furthest thing from your mind.

  1. Hakone, Japan

Another perfect location for a couple’s retreat can be found in Hakone, Japan. Like Helca Island and Jukkasjärvi, Hakone will instantly transport you away from your worries and into another world. Despite being only a brief train ride out of Tokyo, this scenic mountain town is idyllic, peaceful and will take you back in time.

Set against the backdrop of Mount Fuji, you can take a cable car up the mountain or take a restorative dip in the natural hot springs. Or slip further into nature with a walk through the Ancient Cedar Avenue, a 2km road from the Edo period lined with majestic trees on both sides. When you’re ready for a change of scenery, feel the enormity of Owakudani valley, a desolate volcanic outpost forgotten by time.

When life is and work commitments are getting you down, taking the time to reconnect with both nature and your spouse can be just the cure you need. After a week away from everyday life, you’ll feel your energy levels restored, your relationship renewed, and your mind ready to return to work in peak performance.
