Motherhood is one of the most important stages of a woman’s life but also one of the most difficult. If you’re preparing to become a mother for the first time, you probably have a million unanswered questions and even more fears regarding your baby’s safety.

One of the most common concerns of new parents is how to create a welcoming environment for the baby when they already have a pet at home. How will the dog react to the newborn? Will he or she behave in the baby’s presence? Will he or she become jealous? Let’s look deeper into this aspect and discover the easiest ways to prepare your pooch for welcoming a new member of the family.

Start training as soon as possible

You should start training your dog the first weeks you welcome it into your home if you want it to grow up being obedient and well-behaved. It takes a lot of time and patience but even older dogs that you might adopt can be trained and change their behavior.

It goes without saying that training should only be conducted using rewards as incentives and you should never use fear, anger, yelling or violence to make your pet behave. A loved pet is a well-behaved one but, as we previously mentioned, it will take time.

If you plan on having children one day, you should also allow your pup to get used to babies and children from an early age. If it grows up surrounded by little humans, it will more likely accept one into your home later on.

Allow your dog to actively participate in the nursery decoration

Based on how much you want to be done by the time your baby arrives home, you should start decorating the nursery a couple of months in advance. However, instead of always keeping the door shut and preventing your pet from getting inside, you should allow the dog to actively participate.

It will be a fun, relaxing, and rewarding experience for it if it gets to stay with you while assembling the new furniture, painting the walls or having everything else set up. This will also help your dog get used to the new smells and associate the room with a happy memory.

On that same note, make sure your doggo is also aware of the new
