I got the privilege to read New Girl by Paige Harbison through Net Galley.

New Girl tells the story of Becca and the “New Girl” at the same time. When Becca goes missing, “New Girl” gets to come join the private school Becca was at. You get to see the after affects of someone who goes missing (which isn’t good). Add that to the tension of someone who is “replacing” the missing girl (which “New Girl” tries to do, even though she doesn’t mean to) and you get a very interesting story.

I liked how it went back and forth in viewpoints. You got to see what Becca did/went through before she went missing and got to see how manipulative and attention-hungry she was. And when “New Girl” (which, I didn’t realize until halfway through the book, that you didn’t even know what her real name was – everyone just referred to her as “New Girl”) comes to the private school after Becca goes missing, the tension is high because people are trying to figure out where Becca went and some of them have something against “New Girl” because they think she’s trying to become Becca. It really does not help that Becca’s old roommate gets “New Girl” when she comes to the school. I felt bad for “New Girl” because her roommate was so cold to her and humiliated her on several occasions.

Max, Becca’s ex-boyfriend, is a good character. You got to see the struggles he went through because he felt that he caused Becca to disappear. He became close to “New Girl” and I’m glad he didn’t let everyone else’s dislike towards “New Girl” affect his friendship with her. I think they both needed each other; “New Girl” needed to feel like she was wanted at the school and Max needed to feel that he was a good guy.

New Girl is a medium speed read. It took me about 4 days to read this all together. It did keep me on the edge of my seat because I wanted to find out what happened to Becca. There was also the question on whether Becca was pregnant when she disappeared, which I’m still not certain if it was true or not because of how mistrusting Becca was.

Overall, I really liked New Girl and I would definitely recommend it to someone looking for a good read.

I received a digital copy of New Girl via Net Galley in exchange for my review.
