Top 8 Tips for Buying a Mattress Online

The human species, depending on the culture, spends an average of between 6 and 12 hours per day sleeping.  For most people, this amount equals roughly one-third of your entire life, spent in your bed!   Since this is literally the place where we spend the most solid time, isn’t it important to be comfortable here?   If you’re not, it’s time to make vital changes for a better night’s sleep, and you can start with choosing a new mattress.

Top 8 Tips for Buying a Mattress OnlineFor decades, consumers have chosen their mattresses in mattress stores—  entire stores dedicated to showing off dozens of potential mattress choices for you, while you throw yourself on each one trying to determine which one “feels right.”  There are a few problems with this plan though:  If the store doesn’t carry a particular type of mattress, you’ll never know about it.   Also, you could lose an entire day in the mattress store, feeling overwhelmed and confused about which mattress was which afterwards, not to mention feeling sore after all of the flopping around.  Most importantly, you were at the mercy of whatever store you landed upon, and their designated prices.

Over the past couple of years, online startups have popped up trying to eliminate the dizzying number of mattress options as well as streamlining the entire process and making it easier.  Now, you can price shop, buy a mattress, schedule it’s delivery, and the pick up of your old mattress— all while still in your pajamas!    Internet mattress shopping is the way of the future, so here are my top 8 tips for buying a mattress online:

  1. Know Your Mattress Preferences —  This may be from years of experience with what did or did-not work for you, fighting over beds with your partner, or even from talking to friends and interviewing them about their choices.   Make a list going into this whole experience with the texture, material, firmness, size, and price that you prefer.  You can always slightly adjust these preferences later, but having a place to start and an idea of what your deal-breakers are will significantly speed along the process.   If you need to, you can even visit some stores in person if you aren’t sure if you still like a firm mattress or not, for example.

  1.   Check Out the “Top 10” Lists —   Various bloggers, consumers, and experts have their own top 10 lists.  You should start here for recommendations from people who’s job it is to have recommendations. The Sleep Advisor compiled a list of the Top 10 Mattresses for 2017.

  1.  Read Online Reviews —  Read reviews of other consumers to see if the mattress really lives up to it’s online hype.   You might find sometimes that the mattress was amazing but that that there were other factors that made for a bad experience, like that the delivery experience was horrible and it took 8 hours to figure out how to get it out of the box.  By reading reviews you’ll get a truer picture of what this purchasing experience is really going to be like, from start to finish.

  1.  Check out the Retailer’s Website —  The mattress may be advertised as the “Best Mattress Ever” and it may have 12 great reviews, but if you go to check out the website and it’s a picture of a CEO teenager in a t-shirt in his mom’s basement, well, they might not have the greatest return policy.  By checking out the retailer’s website you’ll get a feel for their other products, their reputation, how long they’ve been in business, and bonus— you might score an online coupon code or a better warranty by ordering through them directly.

  1.  Really dig into the company — Going to the website is a wonderful step, but make sure to check at least one third party site, like the Better Business Bureau.  Every company has one or two customers that complains to get something for free, but if you find that the company has hundreds of bad reports you may want to rethink your decision.

  1.  Do a side-by-side comparison of each mattress you favor –  At this point you probably have a favorite, or three, but you might still be confused or overwhelmed about which mattress is the best for you.  It’s very helpful to make a checklist comparing each mattress and it’s pros and cons.  Make sure you include the preferences you indicated in tip #1, to make sure they’re all accounted for.  This can make narrowing down the right mattress for you much easier.

  1.   Look at Videos and Social Media  – With so many mattress companies making viral videos using everything from actors dressed as Goldilocks to raw eggs to wine glasses, it’s easy (and often fun) to find some of these videos and watch them.  This may give you an emotional connection to one mattress and make the decision between one mattress or another just a little bit easier.

  1. Check for coupon codes  – Finally, if you’re stuck between two mattresses, or even if you have the one that’s right for you, make sure you check for any coupon codes, offers, or discounts, to make sure you’re getting the best price possible!

Shopping for a mattress can be overwhelming with all of the possibilities.  There are mattresses that light up, become heated, are eco-friendly, and even ones that make themselves!   Fortunately the internet has made it much easier to narrow down the choices that work for us and have them shipped to our door in no time at all!
