Child is Struggling in School

As a parent, you want the best for your child. Whether it’s their education, or their nutrition, ideally, they should be getting everything they need for a healthy body and mind. A child who is struggling in school may not always be immediately willing to admit it. It can be difficult for parents to identify that their children are struggling.

This is why it’s so important for parents to look for the warning signs. By doing so, they can get them the help they need early on. The longer you wait to take action, the more you risk your child falling behind, so, take a look at some of the telltale warning signs that your child may be having a hard time in school.

Taking a Long Time to Finish Assignments

Usually, children in grade school should not be spending more than an hour a day on homework. If your child is struggling to finish their homework every night, and consequently ends up missing out on free time as a result, it may be an indication that they’re struggling with the material.

As parents, we may not always have time to work with our kids on homework every night, so you may want to enlist the help of someone else. Hiring a tutor for help with homework can be an effective way to make sure your child’s grades improve, but you also have time to do things like make dinner and spend time with your other children.

Doesn’t Want to Discuss Schoolwork

If your child gets irritable and shuts down when you start talking about schoolwork, then this could be a big red flag. In some cases, it may be in regards to a social issue, or maybe even only one area of study, however, it’s important that you don’t ignore their reaction.

It’s important to keep the lines of communication open about schoolwork, since as their parent, you should know what’s going on. If they’re unwilling to keep you up to date, then something needs to change.

Grumpy After School

Many kids who are struggling in school often come home after a long day of school very grumpy. If your child is noticeably disagreeable after attending school, then it’s something to explore. A major negative attitude about something so important could significantly affect their grades.

Change in Grades

One of the most obvious yet often looked over signs that a child is having troubles in school is a change in their grades. Sometimes it may not always be obvious, since it’s often a slow decline. That’s why it’s important to look at report cards closely and keep an eye on any areas that seem to be getting worse. It’s always important to meet with their teacher if you notice that one particular area of study or several are being negatively affected.
