5 Essential Things That Every Graphic Designer Should Know

My friend Raymond is an amazing graphic designer, he has been honing his skills in graphic designing since college and he has worked extremely hard in ensuring that he knows every design software there is like the back of his hand.

However, recently something strange happened. Raymond went for an interview with this first-rate advertising agency for the position of a senior graphic designer, and his work was shockingly rejected by the firm for being too vapid and boring.

Now, if you would have known Raymond as I did, then you would have realized that boring and vapid are the two things that his work is surely not. Instead, his eye for the art combined with his superlative technical excellence is a thing of beauty.

Although, when I met him after the interview and skimmed through his portfolio, I realized that the hard copy prints of his work are abnormally different from their digital originals. Maybe Raymond was not objective enough about this work. Perhaps that’s why he could not see it, but the difference was quite blatant and visible.

The inking was off at edges, the colour balance was all over the place, and even the printing sheet looked cheap. I felt so bad for Raymond, such a great artist but if only he could have printed his portfolio through an expert full-color poster printing service.

Later, that night I decided to help my friend Raymond, I wrote a mail to him regarding the 5 essential things that one should know before printing a digital poster.

Know the size

Even though most organizations follow a regular A2 or A3 size, a designer can also adjust the size as per the accordance of the client. However, no matter the size, one should always ensure to choose the right size while printing it. The slightest of carelessness or misinformation can effectively ruin hours of work and would lead affect the physical appearance of your designed poster.

Always use high resolution, watermark-free pictures

Easily the most common mistake that modern graphic designers make, they tend to download images from Google which are low in quality or are embedded with a hidden watermark. Using such images can give an extremely distasteful impression to the client, and would make your work look tacky and cheap.

Attention to colour quality

One can’t stress enough on the importance of choosing good quality colours or printing ink. The colour quality of the hard copy should harmonize with the digital copy and the ink should enhance the overall beauty of your poster making it immersive and engaging.

Special attention should be given to the quality of colour ink that is been used to print the poster, and rather than printing at home, one should seek guidance from a professional printing service that would use premium quality ink to make your creative look riveting and colourful.

Leave a certain amount of trimming space

There can be a vast difference between the digital and real copies of the same creative. Thus, it’s important that to be mindful of every factor, one should deliberately leave some headroom over the final design so that there would be trimming space available after the final copy is printed. Leaving no trimming space can interfere with the entire design balance making it look choppy and confusing.

Double-check before pressing print

Designing is an incredibly draining process, it requires hard work and persistence. Thus, it’s common for the designer to feel exhausted and burned out. However, you must double-check everything one last time, as you can always find some little changes that are needed to be done. The tiniest of defects can wreck hours and days of hard work, but a few minute final runs through would help make your design perfect.

Now, these were the essential things that I asked my friend Raymond to be mindful about. Furthermore, I would advise every designer to seek assistance from a professional printing service. Even a designer as good as Raymond can be tricked by the intricacies of printing, thus it’s better to leave the job to experts before it ends up doing any kind of irreparable damage to your career.
