If you’re a mom, you’ve probably endured a lot in the past several months. Though some isolation rules have changed, COVID-19 remains a concern that keeps us in our homes.

Fortunately, you have various ways to help you navigate quarantine.

1. Create a Daily Schedule

It’s no secret that quarantine has flipped our schedules upside down. Whether or not you work from home, your job obligations and leisure time have likely blurred together, mainly because your kids aren’t in physical school. Plus, you still have to manage your household responsibilities.

While each day might look different, you and your kids will benefit from a routine. This schedule can change as needed, so you don’t have to put too much pressure on yourself to stay consistent. Instead, you should have some general rules in place to maintain some structure.

  • Establish a morning routine, so your kids wake up, get dressed and eat breakfast at a set time.
  • Have your children do their schoolwork at roughly the same time each day.
  • Plan times for everyone to meet with friends and family safely.

Both you and your kids can benefit from a dedicated routine. It’s the best way to keep everyone grounded and level-headed in what’s ultimately an uncertain time. Plus, your family will have ways to enjoy at least some normalcy and you can adjust quicker once isolation ends.

2. Lend a Hand to a Friend

Since COVID-19 first surfaced, many people haven’t seen their loved ones in person. Therefore, we’re at risk for what’s known as social isolation, which often comes with intense symptoms like depression. It’s a condition that feels like loneliness yet tends to involve specific repercussions.

Although you may have to be creative in how you meet with friends and family, you should make that effort when possible. It’s also smart to reach out to people in your life to ensure they’re alright. An act of kindness can be the difference in someone’s week. Plus, you’ll feel gratified about how you were able to help them overcome the same feelings you’ve endured.

3. Make Time for Self-Care

Emotions like stress and anxiety can be challenging to overcome. That’s especially true when each day comes with challenges. Fortunately, you can find peace and relaxation, as long as you keep self-care in mind. If you spare time for yourself, you’ll see a boost in physical and mental health, which will make quarantine more bearable.

Whenever you have the chance, you should find a moment away from your family to read a book, watch a movie, take a bath or do any other activity that brings you happiness. Though you may only be able to have self-care moments once a week, you should still jump at the opportunity. It’s likely your first instinct to ensure you care for your kids above yourself but you can’t help them properly when you’re not at your best.

4. Aim for Positive Discipline

Try not to make situations worse because you’re stressed or anxious. That’s easier said than done, but you help set the tone for your household’s environment. If you discipline your children in an unproductive manner, you won’t make much progress and everyone will likely feel worse.

Do your best to put a positive spin on how you resolve certain situations. Efforts like reinforcing good deeds, using time-out zones and redirecting poor behavior will be the best approach to deescalate scenarios in ways that also teach your kids a lesson. Patience always matters, too.

5. Get Creative With Living Areas

These past several months have forced most people to stay in one place. Unfortunately, you and your family may not have the biggest apartment or house, so you’re stuck in the same few rooms every day. This scenario can make quarantine even more difficult to manage.

If you want to jazz up your living areas, you can rearrange the furniture and add decorative pieces so the space feels new. Be sure to use rooms for certain purposes, too. It’s easy to get into a habit where you eat lunch at your bedroom desk because you work from there. However, you should change the scenery when you can.

This effort will make sure you don’t feel stuck or trapped in your home.

6. Don’t Hesitate to Reach Out

Overall, you should know that you don’t have to manage quarantine by yourself. It may not be your first instinct to reach out for help, but you shouldn’t hesitate to contact someone when you feel lost or lonely. Resources like psychiatrists are available to help you maintain your mental health. If you need financial help, you can access different government programs to find support. These avenues exist for anyone who wants assistance.
