Calm Kids – 5 Ways to Help Kids Settle Down for Online Schooling

Many parents and students are struggling to get used to the work-from-home/distance learning environment the pandemic has caused. While you’re part of a conference call in one room, your child may be in the other room taking part in a Zoom class. It’s all a bit chaotic for everyone, which can affect your performance at work and your child’s performance at school.

So, what’s a parent to do to curb the chaos and help their child settle down and be serious about online schooling? Several experts have piped in, offering their suggestions for creating the type of environment that encourages kids to be calm and focused in an online education environment.

1. Get Additional Help

Online learning can be difficult for some children, especially when that one-on-one aspect is missing. If you see your child is struggling with a certain subject, consider live online tutoring. The additional help will build your child’s confidence, encouraging them to participate more in online classes.

If you feel that your child is distracted and that your home environment could be contributing to their lack of attention in online classes, consider the following suggestions for creating a space that’s more conducive to learning.

2. Create a Space that’s Right for Learning

The last thing you want is for your child to attend classes from bed in their pajamas. It’s just too tempting for them to get comfy and complacent. When it’s time for school, have your child go to an area that’s designed just for that purpose.

Purchase a desk that has room for their laptop and space for writing. Get them an ergonomically correct chair and all the supplies they need to be productive during class. Allow them to decorate their learning space with pictures and posters they like.

3. Limit Phone Use During School Hours

Although your child may see you as a mean parent, limiting phone use during school hours is one of the best things you can do to encourage them to focus while class is in session. Expect your child to turn their phone off and leave it out of the study space during school hours. Whether you allow phone use during breaks is up to you, but there should be a strict no phone policy while school is in session.

4. Buy Back-to-School Clothes and Supplies

You can encourage your child to get out of bed and get ready for school by purchasing back-to-school clothing and supplies as you normally would if they were physically attending school. With nice clothes to put on and fun school supplies to use, they’ll be excited to get out of bed and get dressed for the day. This is an important tip if your child does better with a structured routine.

5. Make a Stash of Snacks

One of the biggest problems homeschooling parents face is the constant, Mom, I’m hungry! mantra. It’s hard for kids to stay focused (and parents, too, for that matter) when they’re always heading to the kitchen for something to eat or drink.

At the start of each day, help your kids create individual snack stashes that include several of their favorite snacks and drinks for them to ration throughout the day. Have them keep their snack stashes nearby, so they can help themselves. This will keep them at their desks longer, so you both can get some work done.

Many parents and students are struggling with working from home, but by following the tips above, you can help your kids settle down for online schooling.
