Mindfulness

Your attention can be on many things from things worrying you to your phone. These things can sometimes leave you feeling restless and distracted. Practicing mindfulness will make you more aware of things that are happening around you and you will have a greater sense of presence.

Mindfulness has been shown to help people become calmer, more productive at work and at school, and also have a healthier headspace.

The good thing is you can make it part of your day-to-day life. Follow these tips for being mindful and enjoy the rewards.

Observing your breathing

You should take a few minutes from your day so you can focus on your breathing. Keep in mind that mindfulness is not a once-off kind of thing. It might take some practice and time to develop it.

To get started with your practice, take some deep breaths. Breath in and then out. Try casting wandering thoughts aside.

Going for a nature walk

This can be a good way of exercising, but it can be easy to get distracted because you get caught up in your thoughts.

Walking meditation is great because you can guide yourself out of the autopilot humans tend to find themselves in. Find a quiet space to walk then practice it in nature on a city street, or a hallway.

When walking, make sure you pay attention to the falling and lifting of your feet. Notice the movement in your legs and entire body. If your thoughts wander, bring your concentration back to the movement.

Taking mini-breaks throughout the day

If you are having a hard time being still, then it might be better to take some time out of your day. Mindfulness is going to help a lot especially when it comes to refocusing your energy. Think of how you are feeling now whether you have any aches or tiredness and prevent your mind from thinking about other things.

A mini-break provides you with a window to practice mindfulness. Sit in a comfortable place then focus on your feet touching the floor and also your body on the chair. You can use other senses. Focus on what you can see, smell, feel, taste, or hear in the present. You should set aside a couple of minutes where you just pay attention to how your body is feeling instead of what you have been doing.

Don’t do too many things at once

Have you been in a situation where you start doing something then realize you have forgotten what you are doing? There are times you get side-tracked because the brain can get a little fuzzy.

Let’s say you are doing your homework then get a text from a friend. You will be distracted because you are doing too many things. You need to focus on doing one thing at a time. This is even more important when you have to do something that needs full attention.

Creating a journal

You need to have a journal because you get the chance of reflecting on your feelings and thoughts in a private and safe way.

You can get a bullet journal or just note down how you are feeling every day. You can easily track your mood over time and know how you are feeling each day.
