So, you might be able to tell someone your favourite food or the best movie you watched in 2022, but how well do you really know yourself on a deeper level? Many of us struggle with identifying and regulating our emotions because we avoid having to get to know ourselves more intimately.
Deep self-awareness can benefit you in your relationships, your career, and various other facets of life, so it’s in your best interests to make sure you know who you are and what you want.
Here are four steps to start taking that will help you along the journey.
Take Personality Tests
Personality tests might seem superficial, but they can provide you with a great foundation to understanding yourself better. Take a few tests to find out your MBTI and Enneagram types and spend a little time researching the difference between types and what this means about you and those around you.
For example, an ENFP personality type differs quite drastically from an ENTP even though technically only one trait is different between the two. Knowing your type and even those around you might help you to understand their and your own behavioural patterns, and even help you start correcting negative ones.
Spend Time Alone
Even if you’re a social butterfly, spending some time by yourself is imperative. Although it might seem boring or even daunting, there are plenty of benefits of spending time alone. You’ll be forced to face your thoughts and think more deeply about topics you might otherwise avoid.
You don’t need to sit alone in your bedroom for hours to achieve this. Take yourself out on dates go to restaurants or the cinema alone, head out to a bookstore or take a walk alone in the park (without listening to a podcast!).
Try Out New Hobbies
You’d be surprised by how much you can learn about yourself through the simple act of trying new things. Aside from potentially discovering new skills and talents, you might learn more about how you handle frustration, face disappointment, handle positive and negative feedback, etc.
If you feel like you need an outlet, you could pick up a creative hobby or perhaps something active. There are plenty of hobbies, both calming and adventurous that you could try out for a new experience. While you could start a hobby with a friend or partner, doing it all on your own is the best way to connect with yourself.
Start a Journaling Practice
Finally, you might consider starting a daily or weekly journaling practice. Many people find journaling tough for a number of reasons they might not like the feelings that come up or they might not know what to write about in the first place.
If you struggle with what to write, do some research about different types of journaling and look online for journaling prompts. You can even find prompts that are specific to self-reflection these will help you connect with your inner self and learn more about who you are and how you see the world.
