No one can beat the enthusiasm of children when it comes to exploring the world. The little ones are always excited, trying to comprehend the environment on their own terms. Often, they do not hesitate to touch, smell or taste anything that piques their curiosity. This is where the importance of a healthy hygiene routine comes into the picture.
Teaching your kids the importance of personal hygiene can be a tedious task. However, it is an important aspect of their growth and development. To ensure their security and sound health, here are a few personal hygiene tips your kids should instil in their daily life.
Washing Your Hands Regularly
Children have the tendency to touch anything and everything within their reach. Most of the things in our house are covered with dust and bacteria which, when ingested, can lead to severe diseases and allergies.
Teach your kids to wash their hands before touching anything that needs to stay clean and after touching anything that might risk contamination. Ensure that they wash their hands thoroughly with soap and water for more than 20 seconds. Guide them into making a habit of cleaning their hands before eating or making food and after touching anything that’s dirty.
Proper Bathing
The skin plays an important role in ensuring the proper functioning of our body. Dirt, oil and sweat accommodate on the surface of the skin over time that need to be cleaned off routinely.
Including a shower with mild soap and warm water as a daily routine is important to prevent skin diseases in children. The hair should also be washed at least one to two times a week. The intimate areas should be taken special care of.
Toilet Hygiene
Toilets are naturally one of the places that contain the highest amount of germs and bacteria. It is important to guide your kids through healthy toilet habits like flushing the commode on their own, wiping and washing, and keeping the toilet seat clean.
Negligence in the hygiene of private parts can cause bacterial infections and odour to build up. It is important to teach the kids to clean up regularly and use fresh underwear. Girls should be taught to change their tampons and sanitary pads regularly during their menstrual periods.
Brushing and Flossing
Children enjoy snacking on sugary treats like candies, cookies and chocolates. These foods stick to the teeth and become home to acid-producing bacteria that destroy the tooth enamel. Therefore, it is important to teach your kids healthy oral habits from a young age.
Firstly, ensure that your kids brush their teeth regularly, preferably twice a day.
Use toothbrushes with soft bristles and a small amount of toothpaste with low levels of fluoride. Stock up with toothbrush replacement heads and remember to replace them every three to four months. Use scrapers to remove bacteria from the tongues. Floss regularly to remove any food particles lingering between the teeth and gum.
Social Distancing
After the onset of COVID-19, social distancing has become a necessity rather than a choice. It has become a source of great discomfort, especially for children.
Kids struggle a lot to understand the concept of physical distancing. However, it is important to educate them about the serious threats the pandemic imposes. Teach your kids to maintain a 6 feet distance in public places and avoid touching random objects. Use a sensible approach while helping the kids adhere to the pandemic guidelines.
Children learn from what they see. Hence, the best way to teach your kids to develop healthy habits is to inculcate them in your own life. You can also take a more fun approach by playing games and solving puzzles that teach good hygiene practices.
