There’s nothing like basketball in March. And no, we’re not talking about the final stretch of the NBA season, although it’s also exciting to see all teams go toe-to-toe for that final playoff berth. No, we’re talking about the superstars of the future, those who take the floor by storm in March Madness.
Long before that nickname was coined, and even long before some of their stars made it all the way to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, the entire nation was already paralyzed and gathered in front of the radio or the TV to tune in to the best basketball prospects going at it.
Needless to say, that means that some of the most prominent basketball programs usually get the most attention, as they typically feature the most talent and future NBA superstars. However, March has taught us that stacking talent isn’t always enough to go the distance.
Throughout history, just a handful of programs have been able to stand out from the rest of the pack and dominate at the collegiate level. Here, we’re going to honor them by letting you know about the top 3 teams with the most NCAA titles, so consider this when putting together your March Madness betting strategy.
The Three Teams With The Most NCAA Championship
3) North Carolina – 6
The UNC Tar Heels have had some of the all-time greatest basketball players go through their ranks, including NBA legend Michael Jordan. So, it’s not a surprise to see their rank as one of the winningest programs in March Madness history, with a whopping six championships and counting.
Unlike most modern NCAA powerhouses, the Tar Heels aren’t much of a one-and-done program. They favor player development instead, and that has helped them bring the title home in 1957, 1982, 1993, 2005, 2009, and 2017. Some other notable players include Jerry Stackhouse, Antwan Jamison, Brendan Haywood, and James Worthy.
2) Kentucky – 8
While not the winningest basketball program of all time, the Kentucky Wildcats are making a name for being the biggest powerhouse in the game nowadays. They have had a plethora of future NBA players go through their ranks, constantly sitting among the top programs in terms of talent and recruiting.
With recent NBA stars like Anthony Davis, Karl-Anthony Towns, Tyler Herro, Devin Booker, DeMarcus Cousins, and John Wall, among countless others, the Wildcats have found plenty of success at every single level. Thus far, they’ve won the title in 1948, 1949, 1951, 1958, 1978, 1996, 1998, and 2012, and they should always be considered as perennial contenders, regardless of who’s suiting up for them.
1) UCLA – 11
And last but not least, we find the UCLA Bruins, the ultimate basketball program in history. However, it’s been a while since they were considered the giant powerhouse in the collegiate basketball picture, but they still rank way above the rest with 11 championships, won in 1964, 1965, 1967, 1968, 1969, 1970, 1971, 1972, 1973, 1975, and 1995.
Notably, legendary coach John Wooden helped them win 10 of those 11 titles, with NBA legend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar as the most prominent player in program history after winning three championships. Unfortunately, the Bruins haven’t won a championship in nearly thirty years, even though they’ve had no shortage of NBA-caliber talent in that span.
Players like Kevin Love, Zach LaVine, Lonzo Ball, Jrue Holiday, and even former MVP Russell Westbrook played for the Bruins during their collegiate days, so it’s crazy to realize that they haven’t been able to make it to the final since 2006. Still, it won’t be long before they reclaim their place in the NCAA Hoops hierarchy.
