Access and Braking When Choosing a Trailer

If you are looking at buying a 7×12 enclosed trailer or some other type and are considering certain factors and questions, you should include in your research what kind of access you need and what kind of braking system you need. Here is a closer look at these two trailer concerns.

What type of rear access to choose

If you have decided on an enclosed trailer you then need to consider whether to have a single door like a barn door, a ramp rear door, or double rear doors. Your decision is going to be hugely dependent on what cargo you are pulling with the trailer.

Ramp rear door – If you are going to be moving vehicles then a ramp is going to be your easiest method of loading and unloading. But just make sure that the ramp is spring-assisted as they can be very heavy otherwise. Ramps are also a great option for when you are using a dolly or such to move heavy items on and off the trailer like furniture, or heavy gardening equipment. Some trailer makers are choosing to add a side door to the trailer for easier access when you do not need the ramp down.

Double doors – Ramps as useful as they are also cumbersome especially if you are using the trailer often. In which case, you might want to consider a double-door 6×12 enclosed trailer. They are easy to open and get in and out when you just need to reach for something like a tool. You just close the door rather than having to drop the ramp each time. With a ramp, there is also the concern of having the clearance, and you do not have that issue with double doors.

Single doors – These are best for smaller trailers and have the same convenience as the double doors. If you are not going to be loading large items on the trailer then you could choose this option.

What type of braking system to choose

As well as having different rear door access options there are several braking systems for a 7×12 enclosed trailer and others, to consider as well.

Electric braking – This is the more common type of braking found and it connects the brake system on the tow vehicle to that on the trailer with the installation of a brake controller. Essentially the brake force you then use in the tow vehicle is also apple to the trailer brakes. Some people prefer them to surge brakes because they are independent of the tow vehicle so if something happens to your brakes in the tow vehicle you can activate manually the brake controller so it slows the trailer down.

Hydraulic surge brakes – As the tow vehicle brakes, the surge of the trailer moving towards it compresses the surge actuator and a cylinder compresses and force is applied from it to the braking cylinders. This braking system is more expensive and tends to be for when different tow vehicles are being used on the 6×12 enclosed trailer or trailer of your choice.
