It’s not always easy staying close as a family. Maybe you’re a parent, and you have to work many hours every week. You might work a couple of jobs, and perhaps your spouse or partner does as well.

You may struggle to come up with ways to stay close, particularly if you have slightly older kids who like to spend a lot of time in their rooms by themselves. It’s helpful to figure out some family activities you can all enjoy, though. That’s one way to ensure everyone stays mentally healthy and connected as your kids grow up.

In this article, we’ll talk about some things you can do together as a family that should keep you close.

You Can Do a Cancer Walk or Run

You might know about cancer or other health walks or runs you can do around your city. You can always get some breast cancer awareness t-shirts or something similar, but maybe you want to do something more proactive as a family.

Maybe you know someone in your family who has battled cancer, and perhaps you’ve lost someone to this insidious disease. Almost everyone knows someone who cancer has impacted.

You can sign the whole family up for one of these walks, runs, or bike rides. You can raise money to help combat the disease, and you’ll also do something together that should make you all feel good about yourselves.

You Can Cook Together

Maybe you like to cook, but you can’t do it often if you work a lot. You might find you pick up a pizza or get some fast food more nights than not. If so, you may miss cooking, and you should try to do it when you can.

You can also pass on your cooking skills to your family. Your kids should know how to do some kitchen basics that will definitely help them as they get older and eventually move out on their own.

You can come up with one day per week when either you or your spouse or partner cooks with the kids. You might make dinner together or breakfast if that works better for your schedule.

You might start with something simple, like pasta, and then work up to some more complex dishes. Maybe you can have each child make a side dish, salad, or dessert.

You can then sit in the kitchen or dining room and enjoy the meal you’ve made together. You’ll probably find the food tastes better if you all helped prepare it. You can also use this time to talk to your kids and see what’s going on in their lives.

You Can Have Family Movie or Video Game Night

You might pick one night each week and designate that family movie or video game night. You can take turns picking out movies. You might introduce your kids to some classic films that you loved as a child, like the Star Wars or Indiana Jones series.

Make sure you select age-appropriate films that won’t scare your kids if you still have some younger ones. If your children don’t like movies so much, you might pick a show to binge-watch with them instead. Maybe there’s a particular cartoon they like, such as SpongeBob.

You might also do a family video game night. If you get your kids a Nintendo Switch or something like that, you can all play Animal Crossing together or something else. You might play one of the classic Super Mario games or some other option where everyone can take turns playing together or against one another.

You Can Take Day Trips

Maybe you can take day trips with your family on the weekends sometimes. You can take trips depending on what’s close to your house.

You might go check out one of the Great Lakes if you live close to one. You can go to a national park if you have one nearby that you can get to within a day.

You might camp out with the family one night, or perhaps you can even take a whole weekend and do some camping if you can get the time off from work. Maybe you need to put in a lot of hours to keep the household afloat, but taking a little time to bond with the family should be a priority as well.

You can hike around and see some flora and fauna. You might try to identify different animal and plant species together.

You Can Ride Bikes Together

You might get bikes for every family member and do family bike rides on the weekends. You can get a bike for every kid and teach them to ride.

This way, you’ll all get some exercise, and you can explore your neighborhood and city as well. You might take a basket on your bike and hit a street fair or farmer’s market.

You can grab some fresh fruit and vegetables when they are in season. You’re helping the local economy that way, and you can usually get much fresher produce than you’d find at a grocery store.

You Can Meditate Together

You might try meditation as a family. That may seem a little unconventional, but many meditation apps exist now that you can download to your phone for free or for a small cost. You can select one that seems perfect for your family and try it out.

Most people realize that meditation helps them relax, and maybe your whole family needs that this year. Plenty of stressors exist, and you don’t want to let any of them overwhelm you.

You can sit down and practice breathing and relaxing together. You can feel the day’s cares melt away, and you’re doing it as a family. That should bring you all closer together and make you really feel the familial connection.

Try one of these activities or several of them. By doing so, you’ll make sure you create some happy memories and stay a closely-knit unit.
