Calibration gases are standard gases used to check and measure the instrumentation accuracy to detect other gases. These are used as detectors and stored in cylinders. Before processing, instruments have to be checked for any damages. Any leakages or damages may end up in a disaster. This test gas is formulated following all the standard regulations.

The techniques to produce this gaseous mixture are called gravimetric and volumetric methods. There are different types of test gas to deduct various forms of gases released in the atmosphere. This test gas is used in several fields to measure and detect air quality, breath alcohol, combustion, hydrocarbon emission, automotive emissions, marine emissions and many others.

DIFFERENT AREAS OF USAGE:

BREATH ALCOHOL ANALYSER:

The instrument used to detect alcohol consumption by breathing into it requires precision for proper functioning. This instrument has to be analysed using the standard gas mixture. The calibration gas used to detect this instrument are ethanol and nitrogen. Both components have to be mixed in standard proportions. Ethanol of different concentrations can be added in this mixture like 25, 155.7, 210, and 220 ppm (parts per million). These test gas cylinders should be accredited by IEC or ISO 17025. 

These test gases are stored in cylinders of different capacities. Only a small amount of this mixture is used during the detection process. According to the IEC and ISO standards, the shelf life of these text gases is limited to 3 years. The use of expired gas for calibration may result in explosion or other disasters. So, manufacturers of alcohol analysers must purchase portable test gas cylinders of minimum quantity. Police officials use these instruments to detect people drunk and driving.

AUTOMOTIVE EMISSION:

Automobile products like the bike, car and other vehicles emit harmful gases which can pollute the atmosphere. These emissions release contaminants and gases like hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides and others. These pollutants disturb the balance in the atmosphere. The use of personal vehicles is increasing day by day that leads to ozone depletion and other calamities. So, it is important to reduce the release of these gases into the environment.

 The emission of each automotive engine is measured using an instrument. To achieve accuracy and precision, the instrument has to be calibrated using the test gas. 

The standard test gas to calibrate emission monitoring equipment is a mixture of cobalt, propane, and nitrogen, balancing the other two gases. The standard proportion or formulas for these text gas mixtures is listed in detail in the official ISO and IEC websites.

LUNG FUNCTION TESTING:

The medical industry is evolving along with technological instruments. Many modern instruments are used in this field to measure, detect various functions of the body. This lung function testing is used in laboratories to analyse the function of the lungs. Any dysfunctions found are treated with respective medications as prescribed by the doctors. So the instrument must be accurate and calibrated as these are related to the life of a person. To calibrate the pulmonary testing equipment oxygen, and carbon dioxide are used. 

This test gas is used to calibrate various instruments. Failing to calibrate equipment leads to harmful effects. For example, instruments used in laboratories and hospitals should be 100% accurate without any compromises. Any mistakes can even cost a life. The release of contaminated emissions from vehicles and ships deteriorates the protective layers in the atmosphere. All these protocols have to be followed to ensure the safety of lives and balance the exploitation caused due to human activity.
