Dining Chairs

The dining room is a space to be proud of and show off their creativity for those who enjoy throwing dinner parties. But aside from being aesthetically pleasing, the space must also be functional. Having everyone seated comfortably is a huge part of that function.

You want to choose seating that won’t become uncomfortable after sitting for a few minutes. People tend to sit and talk for long periods during dinner parties, and the wrong seating can make it an unpleasant experience. You have to purchase chairs that meet your household and entertainment needs. Here are a few things to consider before buying dining or kitchen chairs.

Firstly, make sure the dining room chairs are proportionate to the space and the table. Take measurements of the room and table to pick out the perfect-sized chair. Chair width and height are important as you don’t want to overwhelm or underwhelm the table.

The average dining room chair is around 18-inches from floor to seat. A standard table is around 30 inches tall. That means to stick with chairs that are approximately 18-inches tall so that everyone has enough leg room when seated.

You also want to be sure they have enough elbow room, so the chair’s width is just as important. On average, dining chairs are about 18 to 20-inches wide. If the chair has arms, it may be up to 6 inches wider. You’ll have to decide if you want to stay at this size or go wider or narrower. As you do so, think about how many chairs will fit comfortably on each side of the table.

Your standard 72-inch long rectangular table seats up to six people, and table 96-inches in length seats up to eight guests. You can seat ten people at a table that’s 120-inch long. The same goes for an oval table.

A 48-inch round or square table seats four people. If the table is 60-inches, then it will seat six, and if it’s 72-inches, it will seat eight people.

For oddly shaped tables, the general design rule is that at least 6-inches of space are needed between each chair to ensure proper elbow room. Thirty-six inches should be left between the chairs and wall and the other furniture in the space. That will allow guests to move to and away from the table easily. Keeping it distant from the other furniture provides enough space to walk around the room without feeling cramped.

Be sure to choose a dining room material to meet your household needs. There are a few materials to choose from, so narrowing down the right one can be difficult. The most commonly used materials are wood, metal, and upholstered.

If your home furniture has a traditional look and feel, wood dining chairs will mesh perfectly. That is especially true if the other furnishings are wood. Because wooden chairs are so popular, they come in a variety of design styles. Get them with or without arms, tall or short backs, or upholstered seating
