5 steps to defrosting your car
- Check your wipers Make sure your wipers are turned off before you clear any ice. If they are left on when you start the car then they could get caught on the ice which will damage their motor.
- Start your engine Begin by switching on your engine so that your car can blow warm air onto the windscreen. Once the ice has begun to melt, you can turn on your aircon to reduce the moisture build-up on the windows.
- Clear off the snow unfortunately, while snow is fun for kids, it can add time on to the defrosting process. Whilst your car is dealing with the ice, get out and sweep the snow off with a brush. This will ensure that your lights are clear and all visual impairments from the snow are reduced.
- Get scraping A great way to speed up the process is to scrape the more stubborn ice off yourself. This ice can take a while to defrost with just the warm air itself so get on the road quicker by scraping it off yourself.
- Ensure your windows are clear Once the ice is gone, the final step is to ensure that you have full visibility of the road. Check each window and mirror is clear and when they are, your journey can begin.
What to avoid
When it comes to defrosting our cars, there are a plethora of hacks that people fall for when they are in a rush to defrost their windscreen. Unfortunately, some of these can actually increase the time that it takes to complete the defrosting. Here’s what to avoid:
- Hot water Pouring hot water on your windscreen can lead to cracking due to the severe temperature changes inflicted on the window.
- Using your hands/materials to remove moisture This can result in smearing which will only make your vision worse.
- Don’t leave your car unmanned Whilst your car is defrosting, stay with it to avoid theft. With over 89 thousand vehicle thefts in England and Wales in 2020/2021, don’t give thieves an easy time stealing your car this winter.
