With time on your hands and an adventurous spirit, you and your family can have the time of your lives traversing the wide-open plains of the United States. Each state is famous for something different, and they’re all worth a visit, but there are a few hot spots no traveler should leave undiscovered. The following trip ideas promise a good time for you and your whole family.

Walt Disney is at the heart of many a childhood memory in the Western world, and there’s no better way to reawaken your inner child than by visiting his very own theme park. The original Disneyland in Anaheim, California is widely considered one of America’s top attractions for families, and once you set foot inside the front gates, you’ll understand why. The park has attractions to suit kids of every age group, and new rides are always on the way, but it may just be the classics (think “It’s a Small World”) that make your day out memorable.

Niagara Falls

One of the seven natural wonders of the world, Niagara Falls makes for a great bucket list highlight, especially in the summer. The falls are free to visit, making this an even more attractive option for a family holiday, but if you’re willing to pay, you’ll find many worthwhile experiences on offer. The boat tour behind the waterfall promises to please kids of all ages, while the walking tours can help keep the older kids entertained. Although no camera could truly do justice to the wondrous views, memories made here will last a lifetime.

Route 66

When you’ve got time on your side, Route 66 is the quintessential road trip option, taking you through eight different states and passing countless tourist attractions. From Arizona’s national parks and photo-worthy trading posts to the world’s second-largest rocking chair in Missouri, there’s no shortage of fascinating, unique tourist attractions to see. Consider it a bonus that the restaurant options cater so well to food fanatics and restless kids alike. Stop for a lazy breakfast at Lou Mitchell’s bakery, grab a quick, tasty lunch from a little place called The Cozy Dog Drive-In, or skip it all for a milkshake from Waylan’s Ku Ku Burger – your tastebuds will love you either way.

Yellowstone National Park

If you like the idea of getting closer to nature on your trip, Yellowstone is the way to do it, boasting more natural attractions than you can poke a stick at. Waterfalls, geysers, rivers, hot springs, and even active volcanoes can be found within the bounds of the park, and you’ll be able to reach many things from the comfort of your own car. Many of the attractions are ticketed, meaning you’ll need to plan ahead, but the thousands of tourists visiting each year can attest that the experiences on offer are worth the expense. If you can get a room, the famous Old Faithful Inn will make it easy to extend your stay, although you might find there’s too much to pack into even a few days. You’re not going to want to forget your camera for hiking!

Grand Canyon

Much more than just a rock, this one-of-a-kind crater has become a must-see family-friendly destination. There are a range of exciting ways to experience the natural terrain, from hiking trails and mule rides to river rafting and skywalks. When little legs grow tired of hiking, biking, and exploring, scenic train and helicopter rides are on offer, along with plenty of space to set up camp for the night. Just make sure you leave time to experience the Grand Canyon Skywalk – it’s not for the faint of heart or those with a fear of heights, but it will afford you endless, amazing photo opportunities.

San Diego

Lovers of sun, sand, and surf will feel right at home in San Diego. First and foremost, the city is home to many beautiful beaches, the most famous being Mission Beach, Coronado Beach and La Jolla Shores, so you’ll have plenty of chances to hit the surf. It’s also a great place to interact with all kinds of animals, from the lions and elephants of San Diego Zoo to the dolphins and turtles at SeaWorld. The best part? These hot spots offer plenty of shows and rides, ideal for keeping your kids entertained throughout the day.

With so many experiences on offer in America, it’s nearly impossible to make a poor choice of holiday destination. You’ll only regret putting off your travel plans until the kids are fully grown, so choose any route that takes your fancy and squeeze as much family fun out of it as possible.
