As part of the #McFarlandUSAEvent blog team, I got to do some pretty cool things thanks to Disney. All opinions, as always, are 100% my own!
One of the amazing things about Disney movies, to me, is the animated short films they do before them. It’s like that yummy Tootsie Roll center in a Tootsie Pop – it adds an extra sweet touch to the film you are about to watch. For Big Hero 6, we were introduced to a sweet, adorable puppy named Winston in Feast. This short has quickly become my favorite short. What can I say – I’m a sucker for animals! I would be that crazy cat and dog lady if I could. 😉 While in Los Angeles we got the wonderful opportunity to meet the director of Feast, Patrick Osborne, and listened to the creative process behind the film. It was really interesting hearing how the short film came to be!

I feel a connection to Director Patrick Osborne because he is from Cincinnati, which is where I live! He worked as lead character animator on The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, and as an animator on I Am Legend, Surf’s Up, and Open Season. Patrick was first introduced to us through Disney as an animator for the 2008 feature film Bolt, which is another favorite of my family’s! He then went on to work on the Prep & Landing movies and then in Disney’s 2010 Tangled. Osborned has served as head of animation for Walt Disney Animation Studios’ Oscar-winning short Paperman, and before working full-time for Feast he acted as the co-head of animation for Big Hero 6.

In Feast, we are introduced to an adorable puppy whose owner names him Winston. We get to see Winston grow over time and we can tell how things are going in the owner’s life through what he feeds Winston. And Winston loves to eat people food! When the owner meets a health-concious woman, Winston isn’t too happy because the contents of his food bowl change. But then something sad happens with the owner and his girlfriend. At first Winston is really happy to have his “regular” food back, but then he realizes how sad his owner is. So Winston comes to the rescue and makes everyone happy again.

One of the big inspirations for Feast came from short video clips he took of his dinners throughout 2012. He wanted to show a couple’s life story through dinner’s only. From start to finish, the whole project took 51 weeks to finish.
A single person’s dinner looks different than when you’re on a first date and trying really hard, or when you’ve been dumped. And there’s something to be said about “important” meals as well, like weddings, birthdays and other celebrations that take place around the dinner table. It seemed like a cool thing to center a story on.
Later into the process, he decided to bring in cute Winston. To get the mannerisms and facial expressions for Winston, they actually had a whole day where they brought in dogs and played with them. How cool!
Osborne let us know about a couple things to look for while watching the movie:
- Nordictrac – In the bedroom you will see a Nordictrac, and this is a nod to the one that was in his house that always became a clothes rack.
- Wedding Dress – [Spoiler alert] The couple in the movie gets married, and the wedding dress the wife wears is styled just like Patrick Osborne’s wife’s wedding dress was.
Feast
