It can be hard to think about where to keep the possessions which we own. Some of us have lofts and plastic boxes everywhere, others don’t have anything for storing their things. Here are some ways you can get creative with storage you can make use of throughout the year.

1. Buy plastic boxes
Transparent plastic boxes are the hallmark of every home organizer’s methods. The best ones allow you to keep lots of items together while being able to see what is inside and quickly locate them. Similarly, buying similar size boxes will allow you to store lots of them next to one another and to ensure that you don’t waste space. Keep the boxes on top of wardrobes, under beds or wherever they are out of the way but can be located easily.
2. Consider storage outside
It is tempting to move some things out of your house completely for example, to a commercial storage locker but this is not always the most practicable solution. You may want access to your things again in a hurry, in which case it is hard to gain entry to such lockers. If you have a garage, consider stacking your things inside and parking the car in the driveway, or on the road. Or if you do not have a garage, it could be a wise investment to store your things in portable storage shelters. Indeed, even if you have a garden shed, a portable shelter is useful because many models can be dismantled at will, and therefore do not have to take up space all year round.
3. Have seasonal storage
One thing which can get in the way of organization is the fact there are some things we need during certain seasons and not in others. For example, having winter jumpers taking up bulky space alongside summer dresses can feel like a pain in the midst of July, but we still want our winter clothes because come December, they are the only thing we will wear. This is why keeping seasonal storage boxes can be useful; you can swap clothes in and out as seasons come and go. This can take the form of something as simple as a suitcase on top of the cupboards, or boxes under the bed.
4. Labeling
Labeling is ultimately the most crucial part of storage. Even when you make use of the above options with transparent boxes, storing things in your garage, or whatever else adding labels will help you find your things quickly, as the items in the box are not always recognizable. Ensure labels are large and clear. Some people make use of professional label-makers, magnetic labels or fancy stickers, but white sticky labels and black marker pens with clear writing in capital letters is often the most effective way of labeling your things.
Sometimes storage may cost a little, and it can be difficult, because psychologically we do not consider it as valuable as say clothes or technological equipment things we directly use for our enjoyment. But the thing to remember is that storage is an enabler for us to be able to manage our possessions and make use of them appropriately.
