10 Gifts I Secretly Wish My Kids Would Give Me This Mother’s Day

Sharing is caring!

Mother’s Day

I love the handmade cards. I will treasure the slightly chaotic breakfast in bed. I genuinely do.

But if I’m being honest? If I could quietly curate my own Mother’s Day?

These are the ten gifts I actually dream about.

1. A Miniature World I Can Build

Miniature world

I spend so much time organising everyone else’s world. I’d love something that lets me build a tiny one of my own.

Anavrin’s DIY book nooks are intricate miniature street scenes that slide between books on a shelf. Think glowing lanterns, timber shop fronts, little alleyways you only notice when you lean closer.

The Kyoto Gion design feels calm and atmospheric. Omoide Yokocho has that cosy, nostalgic energy.

It’s not just decor. It’s an afternoon of quiet focus, then something that glows softly on my bookshelf long after Mother’s Day is over.

2. A Proper Three-Course Lunch, Thought Through

Three-Course Lunch

Not “Where do you want to go?”
Not “We’ll see what’s available.”

I want a reservation made in advance at a place known for doing one thing really well.

Start with burrata and blood orange or oysters and a crisp glass of white.

Then slow-roasted lamb shoulder with rosemary and anchovy, or handmade pappardelle with wild mushrooms and brown butter.

Finish with a dark chocolate tart and coffee that isn’t rushed.

The gift is the planning.

3. A Pottery Class Where I Actually Make Something Useful

Not a generic voucher that sits in my inbox.

Book the Saturday morning throwing session at a local ceramics studio. The kind where you learn to centre clay properly and come back weeks later to collect your glazed bowl.

I want a slightly imperfect breakfast bowl that I use every single day and think, “We made this.”

4. A Photo Book That’s Edited, Not Dumped

Not 200 random camera roll images uploaded in five minutes.

I want 40 carefully chosen photos. Printed on matte paper. Simple white borders. Short captions with dates and locations.

A slim hardback I can leave on the coffee table without apologising for it.

5. A “Sunday Morning” Box Curated Around Me

Loose-leaf Earl Grey from Fortnum & Mason.
A handmade ceramic mug from a local maker.
A new hardback I actually asked for.
A soft neutral throw.

And that Anavrin book nook glows gently between my books while I sit down uninterrupted.

That feels like someone thought about how I actually relax.

6. A Perfume-Blending Workshop

Perfume

Not a department store bottle chosen in a rush.

A two-hour scent blending session where I create something layered and personal. Notes of bergamot, sandalwood, maybe a little jasmine.

A bottle that smells like me, not like a marketing campaign.

7. A Properly Set Dinner Table at Home

If we’re eating at home, I don’t want takeaway containers on the counter.

I want linen napkins. Candles. A menu printed for fun. Music playing.

Maybe slow-cooked beef short ribs with creamy polenta. Or a lemon and thyme roast chicken with crispy potatoes and a good bottle of Pinot Noir.

The detail is what makes it feel special.

8. A Design Object That Fits My House

Not something panic bought.

A linen tablecloth in a shade I actually love.
A sculptural vase.
A Phaidon monograph on architecture or gardens.

One beautiful thing is better than five random ones.

9. A Night With No Logistics

No one is asking me what time we’re leaving.
No one needs snacks packed.
No one is reminding me to book the taxi.

Just an evening where everything is handled.

That is the luxury.

10. Time Spent Doing Something Slow

Building a miniature lantern-lit street together.
Throwing clay on a wheel.
Cooking something that takes hours.
Going for a long walk without phones.

The real gift is attention.

I don’t need extravagant.
I need thoughtful.

And maybe something that glows quietly on my bookshelf to remind me I deserve beautiful things too.
