The kitchen sees constant traffic in and out in your household, and with all the cooking and other activity going on, it’s no surprise that it also typically requires the most cleaning. Everyone knows how to keep the countertops and floors clean, but pendants are another story.

With so many different types of glass pendant lights for the kitchen island available, things get even more confusing. The good news is that regardless of the shape of your glass island pendants, the process will be the same, and is very simple.

Getting Started Cleaning Glass Kitchen Island Pendant Lighting

You’ll need to get together some basic materials before you get started, but you’re likely to already have most of them around the house. Gather a large bath towel, a stepladder, microfiber cloths (an extension pole would be helpful, but is optional), paper towels, vinegar, rubbing alcohol, baking soda, dish soap, and Q-tips.

How to Clean Kitchen Island Glass Pendant Lights

It may seem obvious, but the first step you’ll want to begin with is of course to turn off the pendant lights. It’s not necessary to turn it off at the breaker, but that wouldn’t hurt either.

Next, you should lay out a towel on top of your kitchen island, and below your lights. This is to catch the dust particles that will be coming off the lights as you clean, and will save you time from having even more cleaning to do after you’re done with the fixtures.

Your third step is to remove the bulbs if you feel that they will be in the way even just a little bit. Remember that if they were on recently, they’ll be very hot so be sure to leave some time for them to cool off a bit first.

Grab a stepladder that you can stand on during the cleaning process. It might be tempting to just use a chair, but these can become very unsteady once you’re actually standing on top of one. Avoid the worry by being extra careful.

Using a microfiber cloth or duster, begin working your way down the pendant beginning at the very top where the ceiling plate is located, and moving down the chain or cord. If you’re unable to reach all the way to the top, consider purchasing a microfiber duster with an extension pole.

Once you’ve reached the actual fixture where the shade is located, you’ll want to switch to a microfiber cloth which has been dampened with water or vinegar. Gently wipe the shade down, remembering to get both the interior and exterior of the glass shade.

If you still have spots left after this, you can try using a bit of rubbing alcohol on a paper towel (or Q-tips for small, hard to reach crevices). More stubborn spots may require a mixture of baking soda and dish soap. Use a fresh cloth, and then another to wipe off the residue.

Allow a brief amount of time for everything to dry before replacing the bulbs. How often your glass kitchen island pendants will need to be cleaned just depends on your home. Keep an eye on them and repeat as frequently as you feel is necessary. For most, twice a year will be plenty.

You should now know everything necessary to keep your glass kitchen island pendant lighting looking beautiful year round. Remember that it’s only a few minutes of effort to keep these beautiful, central pieces of your kitchen looking great, so the time is well worth it!
