Guide on FFL License types

Different business activities can be conducted based on the type of Federal Firearms License (FFL) you choose for your firearms. There are different kinds of FFL available. One may enable you to become a firearms dealer yourself, i.e., the type 1 of FFL. If you want to craft your own guns and manufacture them on your own, you can also get an FFL to become a manufacturer.

However, there are nine various kinds of FFL available. Before getting to the question of how to obtain an FFL, you must ask yourself the question of what kind of FFL you require depending upon your usage requirements. There is also another type of license, SOL, much similar to the FFL, available for your usage, but that should not be mistaken as a type of FFL.

What is an FFL?

This is a license that enables you to hold firearms legally and then be able to involve in various business activities revolving around firearms and ammunition. This licensing system was initiated by the Gun Control act in 1968 and had its regulatory authority with the ATF.

FFL can be used to refer to both firearms and the person holding the firearms. You need to focus on the context to know what is being talked about. If someone is suggesting to he/her in the conversation, then the person is being referred to. But if there is a mention of a firearm and its features, then the firearms is the subject of the conversation.

Who might need an FFL?

If you want to get involved in the business and dealing process of firearms, then you will require an FFL. This business can revolve around the buying and selling of firearms and even transporting them across. If you want to keep a gun for personal use, you do not need to get an FFL. But for the purpose of the dealing, it is dire to get a license, or your business dealing will be labeled unlawful.

On the other hand, you may have gotten a firearm for personal use in the past, but now they use has become redundant for you. If you decide to get rid of it, then you need to get an FFL even if you intend to sell a firearm that was once in your personal use. Hence for dealing of any kind in firearms, you require an FFL.
