How to Be the Greatest Mom Ever: 10 Steps

Sharing is caring!

When we talk about becoming a great mother, there is no blueprint to follow. Each mother becomes a good one (or bad one) depending on how she reacts under the circumstances she is in. With so many factors in play, being a good mom is more subjective than objective.

Nevertheless, there is nothing wrong with doing certain things to become a good mother, let alone a great one. Most people equate spending and making time for the kids as the bare minimum in being a good mom.

So how do you exactly become a good one at least in certain aspects? How exactly can you showcase your very best for your children?

Continue reading below for some tips in becoming not a perfect mom, but a great one.

1. A Good Mother Knows Her Best is Good Enough

No matter how you look at it, you will always come short in one or two areas in your role as a mother. Thus, the key is to have a mindset that your best is good enough.

When you go all-out in your efforts, there are times when you start to feel like they are not enough. Your efforts may or may not be enough in your eyes. But what matters more is how your child sees them.

If your child is too young, he or she will hardly remember the times you forgot to do something. Instead, what they will remember are the sweet and fun moments you had with them.

2. Don’t Neglect Yourself

Another secret to becoming a great mother is taking care of yourself. This means maintaining a healthy body and a sound mind.

Start by revisiting your diet. What types of food do you normally eat? Maintain a healthy diet and your kids will follow suit as they grow up.

If you’re feeling too sick, don’t hesitate to visit your doctor.

Also, paying attention to yourself means learning how to love and accept yourself for who you are. If you love your child unconditionally, try to give that same love to yourself.

3. Have a Less is More Mindset

The less is more approach will also help you become the best mother you can be. Children, in all their purity, enjoy even the simplest things. Hence, keep things simple but relevant.

When they are still young, you don’t need to throw a huge birthday party. They won’t even remember what took place. But what may stick to their mind is that one small gift.

But of course, if they’re much bigger, no one is stopping you from buying elaborate gifts for your daughter or son.  But as much as possible, keep things simple but substantial.

4. Be Patient and Encouraging

Children can sometimes be too hard to handle. This is especially true for mothers who need to juggle work and home. But if you wish to be a good mother, you need to be patient and encouraging.

As your kids grow up, they become more curious about their surroundings. They will go to all places and try all sorts of things. But they will be careless as well.

Thus, you need to be more patient especially when they don’t listen to you. Be patient when they make mistakes. Learn to strike a balance between giving them freedom while keeping them safe.

Also, encourage them whenever they fall. Inspire them to keep on trying until they accomplish their goals. Focus on their victories and teach them how to learn from their mistakes.

5. Practice Firmness

When you discipline your child, make sure the punishment matches the mistake. This means disciplining them with love and gentleness.

The key is explaining to them first that their behavior is bad. Thereafter, tell them the consequences of their behavior. When meting out the punishment, you need to be consistent.

If you don’t follow through with the disciplining part, your child may not take you seriously.

6. Learn to Apologize

Part of becoming a great mother is coming to terms with your shortcomings. When you’re at fault, make sure you apologize to your child.

Sometimes, you may lose your temper and say something that you don’t mean. Do the same thing in case you physically hurt your child because your emotions got the better of you.

7. Become a Mentor

Before your children go to school and look up to the teacher as a guide, you will be the first mentor they have in their life. As your child learns new skills, help them develop those skills more over time.

Take time to sit down with them. Guide them whenever they make mistakes. If you see them excelling in a certain craft, cultivate their skills by enrolling them in a formal class.

Additionally, be open to your child’s feedback.

8. Don’t Neglect Your Personal Life

Never neglect your personal life. This means making time to do things away from your child. Though motherhood is ideally a 24/7 job, you cannot be beside your child all the time.

Thus, don’t neglect your personal life. Know when to recharge your batteries and give yourself time to take a break.

The best way to do so is to involve your husband or partner in the picture. Allow them to take over as you spend some personal time.

9. Express but Manage Your Feelings

Don’t hesitate to show your child how you truly feel. Express your feelings but learn how to manage them. Emotional management is one of the most important lessons your child can learn from you.

Even if you are going through a bad day, show your emotions. Explain to your child why you are feeling that way. But manage it accordingly by not losing your temper.

10. Don’t Forget Date Night

Last but not least, do not neglect your time for your spouse or partner. Keep the romantic fire alive by keeping your date nights sacred. This way, your child will understand how his parents show their love for each other.

Furthermore, it will help your relationship with your partner stay healthy. Studies reveal that children who grow up with two loving parents tend to form successful relationships when they grow up.
