Sleep is an integral part of a child’s growth. During sleep, the muscles are supplied with the blood they need for growth, the energy levels are restored, the tissues are repaired, and growth and development hormones are released. That’s why getting better sleep can have a huge impact on a child’s mental and physical development.

Because sleep is so vital for your children’s health, you need to design their bedrooms to be as sleep-friendly as possible with these tips.

Comfort

A bedroom needs to be comfortable and a space where your child feels is their own. They need to feel at home and treat it as a place where they can relax, unwind and recharge. One of the ways to achieve this is by choosing a comfortable bed and finding the right mattress that will make them want to snuggle in bed and just relax. The fluffier the mattress, the more inviting it will be for them and give them the comfort they need, but the right mattress will also vary according to their age. With technology and ergonomics being taken into consideration, your child’s bed can be really inviting, giving them the emotional attachment they need to look forward to falling asleep.

Lighting

The constant exposure to blue light from screens can really affect the production of the sleep hormone, melatonin, and result in kids having difficulty sleeping. In order to create a healthy sleep environment for your child, you could switch the bulbs in bedside lamps to orange or red lights and prevent your children from using any screens at least one hour before bedtime.

You should also use blackouts to block the light coming from outside on long summer days, which really messes up with a child’s brain, forcing them to not feel sleepy as long as the sun is still up. Sleep is usually associated with darkness and so, in order to get your children to fall asleep, the blackouts will give a false pretense of darkness.

Pastel-colored room

When painting the walls of your kid’s room, it is normal to want to use bright and vibrant colors to make it feel cheerful. But the colors of the room can highly impact the child’s ability to fall asleep. With energetic and cheerful vibrant colors, you could find your child always struggling to sit still, even in the dark. To help your child fall asleep, it is best to choose calm, soothing colors that will fill them up with peacefulness and tranquility, making them more prone to fall asleep.

Considering the psychology of color, you can use one of the following colors for the best effects:

Blue

This color helps spread a feeling of calmness and lowers the blood pressure, as well as heart rates. If your child has tantrums often, the blue shades can really help soothe them and help them relax.

Green

Due to its strong presence in nature, the color green has a positive impact on children as it feels natural and soothing. It is also believed to help improve a child’s reading speed and comprehension.

Yellow

Because yellow is such a positive color that is linked with motivation and happiness, it can have a huge influence on a child’s mood. However, a bright yellow can keep them highly engaged and affect their ability to sleep, making a lighter or pale shade of yellow optimum for a good night’s sleep.

Pink

While pink is mainly associated with girls, it is a rather soothing color that will help your child get the sleep they need, making pale pink a great option for a child’s room, regardless of their gender.

Declutter

Having many objects in a child’s room can be suffocating and spreads negative vibes, deeply affecting your child’s sleep. However, if you focus on making the room spacious with minimal furniture and have a separate area or room for their toys, this will help them associate the room with peace and enjoy the calmness that is reflected by the spaciousness. Teach your kids to constantly tidy up their room, too, by putting their clothes away, removing toys and objects off the floor and always keeping everything in place to make it a space where they can get away from the clutter of life.

Design has the power to affect the most important aspects of a child’s life, including their sleep. Because sleep is imperative for a child’s growth and development, it is crucial to take these elements into account when designing a child’s room to ensure they get the necessary amount of sleep they need.
