How to Dine Out Safely with Kiddos

Sharing is caring!

It can seem like a never-ending conundrum for parents. You want to go out to eat, but you worry about what it’ll be like with your brood there, too. It’s an especially tricky ask nowadays, too. You have to make sure your little ones are safe, on top of ensuring they’re on their best behavior at your restaurant of choice.

However daunting this task may seem, though, it’s more than possible to take the entire family out to dinner  and ensure they’re safe while you eat, too. Here are XX of our best tips for dining out with your kiddos in tow.

1. Choose the Right Restaurant

This may be the most important step of all. Before you take your kids out to eat, make sure you select a place that’s going to be kid-friendly. That doesn’t just mean checking that there’s a children’s menu, either.

Instead, choose an establishment that makes it clear that little ones are welcome. Restaurateurs can do this in a number of ways. They might bulk up their children’s menu so that it’s more than just mac-n-cheese or chicken nuggets. Or, they might install a soft-play area so your kids can bounce around safely, rather than running around a dining room floor that’s not open for play.

You can see how such considerations would keep your children safe when you go out to eat, too. Sure, it might not be the best ambiance for grown-up diners, but that’s not what you’re after when you bring the entire family with you. So, start by doing your research, and skip any establishments that don’t make kids the priority.

2. Pack Some Toys For Your Tots

Now, you might not be lucky enough to find a kid-focused restaurant in your area. You’re not entirely out of luck, though. You can still keep your kids seated, safe and entertained by packing a bag of tricks.

Every parent’s bag of tricks will be different  it has to suit your child’s interests. What toys or books keep them engaged? Put those in the bag and whip them out as soon as you sit down at your table. In a pinch, you always have your smartphone, but experts aren’t too keen on this as a way to entertain children in public. This is especially true for toddlers, who should be learning to interact with people and places. A smartphone or tablet will just distract them from this important development.

3. Don’t Linger For Too Long

When you go out to eat with other adults, you can linger at the dinner table for hours. Your children might not have the patience to lavish in the dining-out experience, though.

So, as you research the restaurants that will suit your family, be sure to check the menu for yourself, too. Know before you sit down what you’ll order, and have an idea of what your kids will want, too. You don’t want to rush your way in and out, of course, but you should order with a bit of haste. That way, you can get your food, eat it in a timely fashion and make a move if your children get restless.

4. Opt For Outside Seating

Experts agree: outdoor activities are safer in the midst of the current pandemic. If you’re worried about the possibility of viral transmission inside, you can still go out to eat. Just choose a place  and ask for a seat  outside.

There are a few more benefits to eating outside with your kids in tow. You don’t have to be as conscious of their volume, first of all. And there could be more room for them to move around outside, too, should they get antsy in their seats or high chairs.

5. Don’t Be Afraid to Take It To Go

We know your goal is to take the family out to dinner. Even with lots of precautionary steps in place, you might get to the restaurant and start to worry. Perhaps your child won’t stop running around, or you get unexpectedly nervous about being in a crowd again. It’s okay to admit to yourself that today’s not the day  you’re not going to be able to get through a meal in public and feel good about it.

There’s no shame in packing it up and asking for your food to go. Yes, take-out isn’t the same as restaurant dining but, sometimes, it’s worth it for your mental health and your children’s physical health, too.

Truly Enjoy a Family Dinner

As a parent, you do everything you can to ensure your kids are safe and happy. Going out to eat can fall into that category, too you can bond over yummy food in an environment that’s welcoming and kid-friendly. Just do your research and be willing to bend, should things change. And, with that, you’re ready for a dinner on the town with your favorite people by your side.
