What Kind of Clothes Do You Like?
Whether we want it or not, we are always influenced by what others around us wear. We see the latest fashion advertisements, window displays, the clothes worn by TV presenters and celebrities every day. All of that influences us either directly or in subtle ways. You might suddenly crave a specific type of jacket or a handbag, only to realize that it was on the cover of a fashion magazine you read or worn by a TV show host last week. The problem with such influences is that we end up dressing like other people around us. It requires a bit of work to find out your own style and the kind of clothes that you genuinely want to wear.
Learn About Fashion from Different Eras
Fashion changes all the time and is typically recycled after a couple of decades or more, so there is no point in focusing on what is currently fashionable. Instead, you should look at fashion from different eras and see what style appeals to you most. You can easily find fashion photos from all eras online, for example, on Pinterest or Instagram. If you are not familiar with earlier fashion, focus on the entire vibe that a particular period creates. For example, you might love the 1950s feminine and soft look with its wide skirts and corseted silhouette, inspired by Christian Dior’s New Look. Or you might admire the nonchalant late 1960s to early 1970s hippie girl with her flowing, romantic dresses, long hair, and no makeup. Or you might identify with the strong, tough businesswoman of the 1980s with a sharp, triangular silhouette, large shoulder pads, short hair, and fierce makeup.
Getting Creative with Styles from Different Eras
Once you have found a style that appeals to you, think of how you might recreate it using entirely contemporary pieces or by adding just one essential vintage item. Some people love a retro appearance where they only buy vintage pieces and replicate an entire look. But that also lacks personality, as they are merely wearing what was fashionable in their chosen era, rather than creating something new. For example, suppose you love a long, flowing hippie dress. You probably don’t want to look like a 1970s barefoot hippy at Woodstock, so you should combine the dress with more contemporary items. For example, wear a biker jacket and high heeled black boots with the dress to create a contrast to its softness and romantic feel. Or suppose you like the short, brightly colored A-line dresses from the 1960s. You would combine them with laced boots, slingbacks or mules, and a fitted jacket in the original look. But to avoid the 1960s preppy vibe, you could create a more relaxed, even grungy feel by wearing the dress with combat boots and a long cardigan or a loose trench coat. You can obviously pick and match your favorite styles from different eras that could create new trends that will then go on to becoming the new era of today’s fashion.
Find Your Own Thing
The key to mixing items from different eras is to update the overall look to avoid being too retro. That way, you are wearing something original that is not straight from the shops at the moment. Still, you are combining it with contemporary items at the same time. Once you start experimenting with mixing pieces from different eras and various styles, you will eventually find the thing that makes you feel unique. For example, I love color, so whatever combination of clothes I’m wearing, I always add a bit of bright color. I also never want to look too preppy and conservative, so if I’m wearing a sharp blazer and heels, I make sure I dress the look down by, for example, wearing jeans and by having a natural hairstyle. Just keep experimenting, and eventually, you will find out what is the key to your unique look.
