The German cockroach (Blattella germanica) is the most common household cockroach found in the world.
The average size of a mature adult is 20-28mm, although these insects may appear more significant due to factors such as starvation and stress. The colouration varies from tan or light brown to dark reddish-brown, with two dark parallel streaks running from the head to the base of the wings. They have fully developed wings, but do not fly, preferring to run away when disturbed.
German cockroaches are scavengers and will eat just about anything organic; their preferences can change depending on their immediate needs. The pests will feed on starches, sweets, meats, and grease. They prefer dirty areas and will feed on garbage if they cannot find something more appealing.
These insects are highly adaptable and can harbour a number of diseases such as dysentery, salmonella, typhoid fever, and gastroenteritis. Also, roaches leave chemical trails in their faeces where other roaches may follow, increasing the spread of these diseases. Female roaches may also carry bacteria responsible for causing food poisoning and diseases like colitis, staphylococcal enteritis, and streptococcus.
Cockroaches get their water from the food they eat and will find sources close by, but there is a chance that they will also drink from standing water. In addition, roaches contaminate food with their faeces, urine, saliva, and other body parts. As a result, the pest can mix with our food in many ways; cockroaches will even climb into the mouth of someone sleeping or unsuspectingly lick something off their hands.
To get rid of roaches, you must first find where they are coming from. Roaches will breed anywhere dark and moist; this includes cracks and crevices in the home, sewer pipes, garbage cans, under sinks, and within floor drains. A female roach can carry an egg capsule at a time, containing as many as 30 eggs. Their average lifespan is 6-12 months; however, adults may only live for about 2 months due to predators and disease.
There are numerous chemical pesticides you can buy at your local hardware store that will effectively kill these pests; however, if this is not desirable or possible, there are still ways to get rid of them. It will be necessary for you to seal all cracks and crevices in the home, clean any standing water sources, remove food sources, and treat the area with bug-killing spray or powder.
If you are experiencing a roach infestation, it is best to hire expert pest control Sutherland Shire; however, if you are in good physical health and have no allergies, consider purchasing the proper safety equipment then learn how to kill cockroaches yourself. It is never advised that you use chemicals without taking any protective measures.
The first step when removing roaches will be ensuring that all cracks and crevices are sealed up, especially in kitchens and bathrooms. These areas are very likely to harbour them so take the time to remove any unnecessary items, clean inside cabinets thoroughly, use glue traps or roach bait stations to kill off any existing pests, and finally seal up all cracks with caulk.
Once you have determined that there is no longer a food source outside of the home, you will want to clean all garbage cans, close off access to pet food, store dry goods in airtight containers, and do not leave water bottles for your pets overnight.
Once the site has been determined clear of any organic or fatty material supporting roach life, it is time to treat the outside with a roach killing powder or spray. Make sure to find the source of any possible entryways into your home and treat those areas as well; if you can see them, you should be able to reach them with a roach bait station.
Finally, once you have laid out all traps and sprayed the outside of your home, seal yourself up inside and wait. If you have done all of your work correctly, they should soon begin to die off, and within a few days, you will not see any more roaches around your property.
