Kick Off Grilling Season with a Lobster Cookout

The warm breeze of Spring is knocking at our doors, which can only mean grilling season is finally upon us once again. As we rush outside to take in the fresh smells of springtime, hand in hand comes the urge to start cooking outdoors. Now, grab your favorite apron and best barbecue tongs because it’s time to heat up the grill and kick off the season with a delicious backyard lobster cookout!

Getting Started: Supplies and Ingredients

Who’s ready for the sweet aroma only the flames of a barbecue can create? Chances are, everyone! Before we can start enjoying, it’s time to plan out how to prepare for a backyard lobster cookout. Whether you have a gas grill, charcoal grill, pellet grill or like to cook with a skillet over burning logs, there are some general supplies you’ll want to gather, including:

  • Propane, charcoal or whatever fuels your grill
  • “Kiss the cook Apron
  • Barbecue tongs
  • Barbecue skewers
  • Cutting board (for prep and bringing food from inside to the grill)
  • Lobster shears or scissors
  • Serving trays, dishware and utensils
  • Ramakins (for butter, lots of butter)
  • Napkins

Figuratively speaking, most grilling enthusiasts and home chefs alike should already have the necessary supplies to get started. Next up is planning out and acquiring the food ingredients that you will need. Before you do anything, the most important thing to remember is that fresh is best. Afterall, nothing is more delicious than fresh lobster!

Best of all, there’s no need to go on the hunt for a local fish market because you can get lobster from Maine delivered right to your front door. To keep it simple, go with lobster tails. After ordering some fresh lobster online, the rest of your ingredients will depend on what side dishes pique your fancy. Of the many tasty side dish options that pair perfectly with lobster, some classic favorites include:

  • Baked potato
  • Caesar salad
  • Coleslaw
  • Corn on the cob
  • Mac n’ cheese
  • Zucchini spears

As you decide what sides to serve at your lobster cookout, make sure not to forget the butter!

How to Grill Lobster

Simply put, it’s a work of art to make perfectly grilled food. Whether you’re an experienced griller or the home chef on occasion, there are a few important steps to remember when grilling lobster tails. While the grill is preheating, follow these steps to prepare the lobster tails:

  • Use shears to cut the shell down the middle starting from the top 
  • Cut halfway through lobster meat down (same direction as shell was cut)
  • Insert skewer lengthwise through lobster meat to keep it from curling on the grill
  • Brush lobster meat with olive oil and season as desired

When you’re ready to put the lobster tails on the grill, place the tails flesh side down for just over 5-minutes, or until lightly charred. Then flip the tails to finish cooking through for approximately 5-minutes. The lobster meat will look opaque in color when ready to enjoy!
