Little-Known Tools for New Mothers

Sharing is caring!

There are dozens of tools on the market to help new mothers care for their young babies, but many of them get overlooked even if they would be a really useful item to have around. Whether you’re buying something for yourself, your partner or a family member who’s recently given birth, there are dozens of items that they might simply never find on their own. Here are some of the most useful ones.

Self-Warming Bottles

While they’re still quite a niche item, there are plenty of self-warming mugs and cups you can buy to keep your drinks hot for longer. Some are designed to actually heat up the drink more than normal, and a few even have their own electric heating system to warm up room temperature liquid. If your baby prefers hot milk (and, later in their development, water or juice) you’ll want to make sure that you can give them that warmth as often as possible.

With a self-warming bottle, you can heat up their milk or formula for much longer, and it should still be warm by the time they’re able to drink it. This is great if you’re spending a long time outside the house for some reason, since it’s not always easy to find a place to heat up liquid when you’re away from home.

Nursing Pillows

A nursing pillow is a great way to keep your baby supported and comfortable while they’re breastfeeding, especially if there’s some reason you wouldn’t want to hold the baby with your bare hands. For example, if you’ve just come home and you still have cold fingers, a pillow can be much more pleasant for them.

Nursing pillows aren’t as essential at other items when it comes to breastfeeding, but they have one other useful purpose: they can help support your back, arms and general torso muscles. Having to hold a baby by hand can be taxing on your body, especially as they grow and get heavier, so you’ll want as much support as possible to minimize how much stress they’ll put on your muscles and bones.

These best nursing pillows are ones that feel comfortable for both you and your baby, preventing pain and irritation on both ends while also helping you feed them properly. Remember that you won’t be able to use it forever, though: eventually, your baby will get too large to properly hold on one. Don’t throw away the pillow straight away, though: it might have other uses in the future, even if you don’t have another child.

Portable Changing Tools

You’ll want to have the proper gear to change your baby’s diaper at the ready, especially when they’re still young and have very limited control over themselves. You can often buy a bag that’s specially prepared to contain everything you’ll need, including a fold-out pad, spare diapers, cleaning tools and a proper way to dispose of the dirty diapers. Even if it isn’t some
