Summer is slowly winding down across the U.S., and it may seem like you and your family have explored all of the outdoor attractions your city has to offer.
If you think you’ve already experienced the beauty of summer and want to try something new, consider a rose garden for your next weekend endeavourbefore it’s too late!
Visiting rose gardens makes for a beautiful opportunity to unwind with your family, while getting vitamin D and exercise, too. The bright, colorful flowers also make for a great summer photo op (hello, Christmas cards!).
The researchers at Spring Hill Nurseries recently explored the best cities for rose gardens based off of five different ranking factors with a possible high score of 50.
Factors like temperature, rainfall, average growing seasons, and sunlight all play an important role in a rose’s ability to grow and flourish from May to autumn.
Based on the research, Floridians may have the best luck exploring rose gardens this summer. Jacksonville and Tampa took the top spots in the ranking and tied for first place.
With the hot sun and frequent summer rain showers, roses have ample opportunity to thrive in Florida heat. The Jacksonville Rose Society is a nonprofit organization that specializes in the care and maintenance of roses across Northeast Florida, and sponsors a vast amount of gardens across the region.
If you’re on the west coast, Phoenix, Tuscan, and Mesa all placed in the top 10 for Arizonians. Perhaps the best kept secret in Mesa, the Rose Garden at MCC Arizona is one of the largest in the country.

The garden, which is kept at Mesa’s community college, is home to nearly 9,000 bushes to explore while boasting free admission to all. You can get lost in the aromas and bright colors of roses, and there’s something for the whole family.
According to MCC’s website, the best time to visit is March through late May, but the second best time starts in October and goes through early January.
Rounding out the top 10 list are several Texas cities. Houston took fourth place with a score of 37 out of 50, while Austin, San Antonio, and Dallas took 7th, 8th, and 9th place.
You can check out the Tyler Rose Garden, about an hour and a half outside of Dallas, for all your rose garden needs. The 14-acre park with more than 38,000 rose bushes plus fountains, gazebos & walking paths is a perfect place to travel for a weekend excursion with the familyit’s sure to impress the kids!
