Must-Do Experiences In Whitsundays

Aerial view of Whitehaven Beach and Hill Inlet in the Whitsundays, featuring brilliant white silica sand swirling through turquoise waters surrounded by lush green islands.

Did you know that Captain James Cook mistakenly named this place ‘Whitsunday’ because he believed he had sailed through the passage on a Whit Sunday, when in fact it was actually a Monday? A small navigational mix-up in 1770 hardly seemed significant at the time. Yet, more than two centuries later, that same coastline attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors from every corner of the globe.

And of course, it’s not difficult to see why this place has become a popular destination. The Whitsundays are located in the heart of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park and consist of 74 stunning, pristine islands. It is basically the gateway to exploring the GBR. Though the islands are highly reef-centred, there are plenty of other things to do in Whitsunday. So let’s explore some of the best Whitsundays experiences!

Whitehaven Beach Tour

Tour boats anchored near Whitehaven Beach as visitors explore the crystal-clear shallows and white silica sands of the Whitsundays.

The beach is located on Whitsunday Island (ya, don’t get confused. Whitsunday Island is actually an island within the wider Whitsundays region). This beach is highly protected and is only accessible by boat. And your best option to explore the beach is via a cruise departing from Airlie Beach. A typical Whitehaven Beach tour includes time on the beach itself, a visit to the famous Hill Inlet Lookout where the tides create swirling patterns of blue and white, and opportunities for swimming, beach walks and photography.

These Airlie Beach cruises also combine trips to other islands like Hamilton Island and Hook Island.

Underwater Reef Stay

If you think of ways to explore the reef, popular options like snorkelling and scuba diving come to the limelight. But underwater Whitsundays Reef Stays? Mate, they’re on another level. This is an overnight stay at Reefworld, a pontoon permanently moored above Hardy Reef.

After spending your daylight hours snorkelling and scuba diving, you get to sleep in a private underwater suite with floor-to-ceiling views of the corals. Ya, talk about immersive experiences! Meals, drinks and snorkelling equipment are all included with the experience.

Snorkelling the Great Barrier Reef

Visitor snorkelling above vibrant coral formations and tropical marine life in the Great Barrier Reef

If you go to any of the islands in the Whitsundays and throw a small rock up, the chances are that it might land on the roof of a random snorkelling tour business. Because snorkelling is the one thing that has no shortage here. However, choosing the one that works best for you is very important

There are experiences that take you to the inner reefs around Border Island or Hook Island. And then there are experiences that take you further into the outer barrier reefs, at Bait Reef, Hardy Reef and so on. On the inner reefs, you can see plate corals, sea turtles, clownfish, etc., and on the outer reefs, you can see hard coral gardens, Maori wrasse, manta rays, reef sharks, etc.

Seaplane Tour Over Whitsundays

Snorkelling, scuba diving, cruising, swimming… ya ya, you’ve explored the GBR in different ways. So how about a change of perspective? For that, try a Whitsundays seaplane tour. These tours provide a bird’s-eye view of many of the 74 islands, revealing beaches and the vivid colours that give this region its identity.

The flights usually depart from Airlie Beach or nearby island resorts and fly over Whitehaven Beach, Hill Inlet, Heart Reef and sections of the Great Barrier Reef. Depending on the package selected, the experiences can range from 60-minute scenic tours to combined air-and-sea adventures that include snorkelling and other island visits.

Jetski Tour

Adventure seekers enjoying a guided jetski tour through the turquoise waters of the Whitsundays.

So, jet ski tours combine sightseeing with high-speed excitement and deliver a memorable contrast to the slower, more relaxed pace of traditional island cruising and snorkelling.

So yes, perhaps Captain Cook’s mistake was oddly fitting, because the Whitsundays are the sort of place that constantly challenge expectations. If you came just for the corals, you’ll soon realise that the Whitty offers much more than that and leaves a lasting impression on you! Don’t wait, book your flights now…
