Naturally Safe

As soon as spring arrives, most people want to get outside and start work on the yard as they soak in the sunshine. From small yards to large, many tasks need to begin in the spring, so the yard doesn’t get overrun with unwanted plants or pests. Here are a few of the most important projects you can do as soon as the sun melts the snow.

1. Water Features

If you have any water features in your yard, you know how difficult it can be to keep them algae free once the aquatic plant has taken hold. To keep decorative water features, ponds, or koi pools free of dangerous algae blooms, use a naturally safe treatment. Make sure anything you add to the water will not harm pets, children, or helpful insects.

2. Pathways

Pathways created from pavers, gravel, or cement should be inspected and checked for problems each spring. If the gravel paths were not lined properly, the rocks may sink into the earth and need to be replaced. Pavers can also sink and may need to be moved and supported each spring. Concrete paths can crack, separate, and shift during hard winters, so check for small issues before they become big problems.

3. Landscape

Your flowers and garden area need organic matter to provide vital nutrients to the new growth; so, use compost to keep moisture in the ground and prevent insects from attacking tiny seedlings. Pull weeds as they appear and remove dead bushes to prevent small rodents from making homes in the underbrush. Don’t forget to feed the lawn and prune your hedges early in the spring.

4. Fencing

Walk your fence line to make sure there are no problems in boards, links, or supports. Fix any problem as soon as you find it to keep the integrity of the unit secure. If colors have faded, power wash the fencing surface before applying a new coat of paint or stain. If you have a chain-link fence, you can remove rust spots and spray with one or two coats of aluminum paint.

Keep your yard family-friendly, and you may find yourself spending more time outside in the warmth of the long days and lovely nights. With the few tasks listed above, you can prepare a firm foundation for summer yard maintenance. You can transform a winter-worn yard into a truly magnificent explosion of green beauty.
