Our Family Road Trip in Málaga With a Rental Car From the Airport

Sharing is caring!

Arriving at Málaga Airport with young children feels a bit like stepping onto a moving conveyor belt. It’s disorienting, but excitingly so. Someone is always asking for a snack just as you’re rushing to get a prime spot for the luggage conveyor. You can’t control your environment in airports, but you can choose to use a rental car – and it’s this single decision that made the trip a whole lot easier.

Picking up the Car

What struck us immediately was how stress-free the whole pickup process was. Car hire Malaga airport had no queues over at the CarGest kiosk. No confusing paperwork and no sense of signing my life away. Even better, the staff seemed genuinely used to families. They produced the child seats quickly and helped make sure they were safely installed. The speed meant we rolled out of the airport feeling like this holiday might, for once, qualify as somewhat relaxing.

Why Renting a Car Made Traveling With Kids So Much Easier

Traveling with children is always a negotiation between adventure and logistics. Málaga’s public transport is good, certainly, but it’s not on the table for this trip. Having a rental car gave us control, and that’s all I ask for to have a relaxing holiday.

Suddenly, naps could happen on the go, in that magical quiet produced only by a car engine humming along. In fact, the journey itself became a tool to get them to sleep while we could explore. Upon arriving, they were always more up for longer days out before getting tired.

We could stop for snacks (I’d take a 30 minute detour just for churros) or pull over at the sight of a particularly enticing playground without rearranging an entire day’s itinerary.

Best Places We Visited in Málaga With Our Little Ones

Beaches That Are Perfect for Children

One of the first places we tested this new automotive freedom was the coast. It’s great because you can’t really get lost, meaning I could put away Google Maps at times. Málaga’s beaches are famously family-friendly too, but even then, certain stretches felt as if they’ve been specifically designed with toddlers in mind. La Malagueta and El Palo had calm, shallow waters that made us feel less like lifeguards and more like actual holidaymakers. Parking was surprisingly easy too, though some of the roads are particularly tight. Fitting everything in the car, including a packed lunch, helped save a lot of money, particularly as the beaches are littered with temptations like kiosks and toys for sale.

Nature Parks and Outdoor Spaces

Málaga’s natural parks are often ignored because of the town and beach, but they were a very useful way to unwind. Montes de Málaga has peaceful trails and many great shaded picnic spots. The children had more space here than on the beach. We also visited a botanical garden where the children could see some koi ponds and friendly lizards.

Reaching the parks without a car would have been a huge risk. It’s probably doable, but missing the last bus back isn’t something I would want to risk.

Hidden Gems Only Reachable by Car

The highlights of the trip weren’t actually the big-ticket attractions but the impromptu stops that we did on a whim (perhaps it’s related to feeling like we “earned” it, rather than being yet another visitor following Google Maps).

Small coastal towns where the beaches were almost empty were a very authentic experience, and the seafood came straight off the boat. The service was a little more relaxed, perhaps less fed up with tourists, and it meant that we could relax more while indulging.

Rural villages were also special, with the many artisan shops to pick up gifts for others. The children tried new foods, and even the adults discovered that we actually like olives after all (ish).

Comfort, Safety, and Space with CarGest

Of course, much of this ease came down to the vehicle itself, but the car from CarGest was spacious enough to hold the full chaos of family life, yet narrow enough to weave through the back roads. The child seats felt sturdy and reliable, which is the least you would expect (but you’d be surprised), while the AC meant that we didn’t have to worry about being too hot.

Driving it was smooth, but more importantly, fuel-efficient, meaning we didn’t have to fill it up as much as expected.

Final Thoughts: Renting a Car at Málaga Airport Is a Must for Families

In the end, renting a car was a good decision. So much so that it’s a non-negotiable now for the next one. It meant that we didn’t just get to see Málaga but also the surrounding villages and the national park.

Public transport may be great in Spain, but it’s never ideal with a full family, kids, and all the holiday extras that we carry on day trips.
