While leaving for a vacation is an exciting event for many travelers, not everyone likes the packing bit. Some travelers prefer to pack under pressure and will wait until the last minute. Others like to start early.
A liveaboard trip presents a different and easy kind of packing. You do not need to pack trunks upon trunks. Since you will be living on the boat, you will not need loads of clothes for your trip. If you are not sure what to bring for your maiden liveaboard experience, read on.
What does your trip itinerary look like? Most likely, you will go from the plane to the ship. Then you will be back on the plane for the return trip. Therefore, you will only need your regular outfits for your flights.
Clothes for a Liveaboard Vacation
Liveaboard packing consists mostly of swimwear and diving gear for diving enthusiasts. You can add a few shorts and t-shirts to these and, your wardrobe is complete. The experience is mostly relaxing with lots of water-based activities and catching the perfect tan.
Once you are out of the water, you can hang your clothes out to dry then wear them for your next adventure. Many liveaboard trips last about a week. Therefore, you will need items such as:
- Swimwear
- T-shirts
- Shorts
Do I Need my Make-up?
If you can get water-proof make-up, that would be the best option. However, you spend a lot of time in the water. You may only get to wear your make-up if you decide to do a dinner date in the course of your trip. Therefore, you do not pack a lot of it.
In a tropical place such as Indonesia, you will need lots of sunblock. This is probably second only to clothes. You may also need to pack some scarves and wide-brimmed hats to keep the sun off your face.
Towels should be light. You will probably only use them for the shower or to dry off after a swim if you choose to. For the most part, you will hardly need them. Do you need towels on a liveaboard?
What about Shoes?
You will certainly not need those dainty heels that go with everything. Flip-flops are all you need on this trip. You may bring a pair of sneakers to wear in the dry area. However, for the dive deck, your flip-flops are the perfect option.
If the liveaboard package includes off-boat excursions, then a pair of appropriate shoes is necessary. If you expect to go hiking, for instance, you should pack sneakers or hiking boots.
Mobile Gadgets and Laptops
Most travelers will ring their phones or tablets to stay in touch with family and friends back at home. They are also useful for posting those glossy images on your socials. Do not forget to pack your adapter or converter to stay powered up.
You can also include a camera to take underwater photos. A Laptop is also useful if you want to get some work done as you take a break from the water and everyone onboard. Remember your charging cables and headphones or earbuds.
Medication
It pays to include some pain meds in your luggage. You never know when you might need it out there in the middle of the ocean. Also, if you are on medication, do not leave that behind. Also, pack any over-the-counter medicines and creams you may need on your trip.
Some people experience kinesia (sea/motion sickness) and may require medication to deal with the discomfort. The irregular movement of the boat causes some people to experience nausea and vomiting.
Diving Equipment
Divers can bring their own diving equipment. However, most liveaboard vessels come with equipment that you can rent. This may be the better option if you want to travel light as diving equipment can be quite bulky.
Conclusion
Many liveaboard vessels do not have spacious rooms. Bulky cases and trunks will only take up the space that you need. Avoid packing garments that will fill up your bags and sleeping space when you unpack.
