Mother and child packing their luggage.

Booking of flights? Check. Making hotel reservations? Check. Packing everyone’s luggage? Getting there! But seriously, packing the whole family is a lot of work! Good thing that no longer has to be the case.

Now, it’s time to let your kids pack on their own. But wait! Would this mean arriving at your holiday destination with a suitcase full of assorted odd socks, toys, and gadgets but no underwear in sight? That doesn’t have to be the case, either!

You can teach your children to pack lightly and efficiently with the help of this article. When they do it right, you may even find yourself asking them to help with your own luggage more often.

Let’s go over some tips that will help teach your kids how to pack like pros so you no longer have to worry about suitcases packed with more toys than clothes. Note that these tips are not only helpful for first-timers but also for frequent travelers, so go ahead and check them out!

Tip #1: Make a few lists.

To ensure your children’s belongings reach their destination, you don’t need to pack all by yourself. Together with your children, create a list of items to place in their luggage, including essentials such as clothes, shoes, and toiletries.

You may consider making another list of items for their own personal carry-on luggage, whether it’s a backpack or duffel bag, which could include their favorite snacks, toys, and portable video game to keep them entertained during the long flight.

Tip #2: Schedule time for family packing.

It is often beneficial to give the family two hours to pack together instead of giving the children a packing deadline, which they will likely miss.

Set this up a day before you leave or earlier, so you won’t have to rush. A good idea is to schedule your flight right after laundry day when everything you and your family need is clean and ready for packing.

Make sure to keep an eye on your kids when they pack so that an oversized stuffed animal doesn’t somehow end up tucked inside their luggage.

Tip #3: Help your kids make smart clothing choices.

When packing with your kids, make sure they follow simple guidelines. Every pair of jeans or skirt must go with every shirt. You may want to think twice about white clothing, as they are more likely to get dirty.

Also, your kids don’t need to pack two attires for every day of the trip. This isn’t Paris Fashion Week, after all.

However, since socks and underwear tend to get sweaty and filthy when unwashed, it would be smart to bring enough for each day of your trip unless you wash them in your hotel room so your children can wear them again.

Tip #4: When packing, reserve only a small space for toys.

Now is the time to play favorites because not every toy and stuffed animal gets to go on a holiday with you and your family.

In addition to keeping the toys organized in one container, this restriction will teach your children the importance of packing accordingly. It also gives them free rein to pack at least one item that brings comfort to them and reminds them of home.

Tip #5: Pre-stack before stuffing in.

Have the children stack items from the checklists beside their luggage. Then, help them optimize their luggage’s load capacity by showing them how to pack properly.

Additionally, teach them a couple of packing suggestions, such as rolling clothes rather than folding them and inserting socks inside the shoes.

This is also your chance to ensure that no essential items have been left behind.

Tip #6: Prep a surprise gift for long-haul flights.
